As someone else has not so subtly stated, I have zero expectations of him being the next great "diamond in the rough", "Tom Brady" find. However, if you go back and look at Brock Purdy's film at Iowa St. I didn't realize how good he actually was. I'm not a Big 12 watcher so obviously I paid zero attention to any game or highlights with Iowa st in it. But I remember last season after Purdy started stringing together a lot of good performances going back and looking up his games and was shocked at how good he looked. The game they played Jalen Hurts and OU is one that jumped out at me. Purdy was slinging very impressively slinging the ball over the field, yet the guy ends up at the bottom of the draft, so who knows wrt's O'Connell?

Absolutely. It's clear David Carr has no integrity. Any GOOD analyst would instantly realize they are too close to the topic / situation and therefore seperate themselves from it as best they could. Of course if he gets asked the question then he should answer, but put out there "I am biased in this situation due to Derek being my brother so take this with a grain of salt..." or something to that effect.
However he is intentionally spearheading these type of statements and forcing his opinion in a "factual" manner.
I too have lost all respect for David Carr and the way he has handled this whole situation. And shame on the networks for not pulling him aside and letting him know he is overstepping and is too close to the topic at hand, therefore needing to take a step back.

David was a shitty QB whose trying to live through his brother. He was insulted we would ship his brother off. He should have never been allowed to broach the subject. Mismanagement by the networks.

Sports networks aren't worried about conflicts of interest, they are worried about ratings. Look no further than ESPN's Craig James, the father of the football player at Texas Tech and an employee of ESPN, who allowed him to use air time for a personal platform to publicly vent about an issue between his son and the late Coach Mike Leach. The networks don't care that David Carr isn't objective, they have him there for any "insider information" he can give and the appearance to the viewers that he is bringing true "INSIDE INFORMATION" when it comes to his brother and the team he plays for. It's business folks.

OConnell may turn into something. I hope he does. This regime has given me no reason to believe that he will. I would love to be wrong, and I will happily admit it if it happens

I do realize I am being maybe OVERLY opptimistic. Having been a lifelong Purdue fan I was jumping for joy when we drafted this young man. I could be all wrong also. Hell...I was jumping for joy when we brought Gruden in. I actually thought MCDaniels was a great coach that had learned his lesson during his time in Denver. Zig? thought he was going to be lights out. Wrong...wrong and wrong....LOL Keep your eyes on this kid....he overcame great odds even making the team at Purdue. He kept at it and worked hard and here he is. If he was a bad choice,so be it. But I don't think so.

I've always said that that the draft is a crap shoot and most of the players turn out to be crap. Who knows? I think if you grouped the players' ratings from a printed draft guide and put them up on a board with those players ranked where we were drafting and threw a dart at the draft board, you would still do better than Gruden and Mayock. They were pathetic.

I know I'm pulling for the kid. For him to end up as a starter, coming in as he did, I have to root for him. He's a grinder, and has to be a smart player and a very hard worker. You don't go from walk on to starter without "it."

How much of "it" does he have?

When Brady came out, I wonder how many prognosticators would have predicted he was going to be the GOAT at QB? Imagine if you had bet $1 on Brady winning multiple Super Bowls. What would the odds have been when he was drafted? A billion to one?

Zero "experts" thought Brady would be good let alone great. He was unathletic, with no real muscular tone, skinny and had an arm stronger than probably only 10% of QBs coming out each year. But yet, he made it and was great.

As I've said, just once, I would like to see the Raiders "hit" on a QB. The last great, winning QB we drafted was Ken Stabler. That's a long time ago.

Teams matter too guys. Brady went to a team that needed him to be a game manager until 2007. He was a good playoff QB and an above average at best regular season QB. Purdy is following the same path. We don't have close to the teams the Patriots had or the 49ers have. Had Brady gone to the Browns let's say, does he even see year 4? He's throwing for roughly 3600 yards, 26 touchdowns and 14 INTs a year his first few years. That doesn't get it done on worse teams. I wish O'Connell the best but he's fighting an uphill battle. We aren't even a playoff caliber team. We can't just trot him out, have him make safe throws, and win 12+ games 24-20. He is going to have to do a lot more than Brady and Purdy did to even make the win 9 games. Why? Because our defense still won't be good. Our roster still is a bottom half of the league roster. I'm not saying he can't be good. I would just be worried about an obviously developmental QB being tossed into the fire and if he is....McDaniels probably doesn't make it to next year unless O'Connell lights the league on fire. Then you have a brand new system with a brand new coach who may not want him.

That's my biggest fear also (previous post) we give up too fast...or MCD will be shown the door and the next coach wont want him. I think he makes it somewhere. Will he be accurate in the NFL like he was at Purdue? If he is...we could have gotten the steal of the draft. I hope all is correct!! Let's go!!

I can safely say that IF the rookie looks good, I’d prefer him starting over the other PUKES that are currently on the team. I hate the Garropolo signing. He’s not a good qb. That niners team MADE him. It’s making Brock Purdy look a helluva lot better than he is too. Hopefully O Connell is way above my expectations
