Countdown to Euro 2008

Next to World Cup soccer - Euro has to be the next best thing. Euro 2008 kicks of this weekend - June 7th with Switzerland vs. Czech Republic and Portugal vs. Turkey.

Printable - groups and matches

ESPNsoccernet - Euro 2008 - Wall Chart

Germany has to be favored with Spain, and normally Italy (not sure with Fabio out), Portugal and maybe France are in the mix.

I would love to see the Holland take it all (Since Ireland is out).

Although not spanish, Spains my team in this tournament.

Cesc Fabregas is my favorite player in the world, and although not a Liverpool fan, Torres is a close second.

Spain never seems to live up to the hype though... We'll see.

My kind of post.

You hear so many people say there is only one football team and that's the Oakland Raiders.

The same holds true when you talk about soccer. There is only one team in soccer and they are the Azzurri, the Italians.

Don't hold your breath with Spain. They are the perrenial chokers when it comes tournament time no matter what tounament.

Their qualifying history is plagued with loss after loss.

I expect no different this year.

The Italians on the other hand have a very good history of success when it comes to World Cup and European Championships.

Coming fresh off the World Cup Championship win, the Italians are poised to follow that up with the next most prestigious title, the European Championship, Euro2008.

Germany will be tough. They always are. Both France and Italy are in the same group and the 2 should slug it out as they did in the World Cup.

The loss of Fabio Cannavaro is a blow to the Italians as his efforts in the World Cup was nothing short of phenomenal.

However, the Italians are deep in defenders with Materazzi, remembered for being the victim of Zidane's head butt, Gattuso and Zambrotta.

This team is deep.

If they have a problem it's surving their group as they have not only France but the Netherlands and Romania. That's a tough group!

Should be a lot of fun but when all is said and done, I like the Italians.

Why not? I was born in Sicily. What do you think Pietro is, Irish?

Forza Italia!

how's this for a host city pic -

I was over in Euro for the 94 world cup - and the cup was in the US.

We had the time of our life and I feel in love with soccer.

I remember gunshot celebrations and cities closing down for games (except the pubs )

Italy almost one that one as well - I think Baggio hit the post and Brazil took the trophy.

Would love to see the Czech Rep make it out of the A bracket, but they dont have much hope of getting any farther. I think its between Germany and Italy. Italy has a harder bracket, however.

Some okay games to open up - both host teams are probably the weakest. Switzerland is doomed after losing their captain...not that they really had a chance.

Could you believe Klose passed up that shot in the early minutes vs. Poland?
I would bet Jaycee dropped one of his beers after that move, but Germany bounced back and controlled Poland.

I am looking forward to the better match-ups starting today – Italy Holland should be a great jump start to the tourney.

Italy, Romania, Holland and France :running

I just rolled up a big Marley doobie for the Dutch and they answered with a nice goal
It looked close to off sides - but puff, puff, pass

Pietro - your boys have their work cut out for them - only 28 minutes in - one thing the Italians do not lack - is confidence.
