My friend had the same problem, but he bought his on craigs list. He called customer service and they said that they could not fix the problem because they don't have the original receipt. So I decided to call customer service myself.
I must have talked to at least 10 people until I got to the general manager or who ever was in charge of the division. I told him that I did not have the receipt and that this was a reported problem with the xbox. At first, he hesitated to help me out. I told him,"Look, all my stuff I buy is from microsoft. I love microsoft. But know I will tell all of my friends that microsoft is terrible at taking care of their customers when there is a problem with their products. I will no longer buy mircosoft products."
After I told him that, he told me that he would personally send out a UPS box to my house. I asked how much it would cost. He said, "it will cost you nothing, just put the xbox in the case and we will fix it for you."
When I got the Xbox back, they didn't repair it. They gave my friend a new system. I love customer service.
