Personally, I like Kornhieser...just not doing commentary. He really does know the game of football. The problem is that his role is semi-comic relief. ESPN is doing the old ABC "capture the casual football fan" thing. While all under the Disney umbrella (ESPN, ABC, MNF and soon the world), the conglomerate has been CONTINUOUSLY attempting to attract the casual sports viewer.
ABC/MNF tried it with Howard Cosel in he begining. They were fortunate things worked out because it bombed at first. Cosel rubbed everyone the wrong way. Fast forward a couple decades and the Dennis Miller fiasco. Ratings plummeted and as a result, they went back to a more traditional crew.
ESPN traveled down that very same road when they tried Rush Limbaugh out on the Sunday Morning Pre Game Show. Things didn't fair much better. (See Limbaugh vs. McNabb heavyweight championship bout) ESPN quickly dropped the idea and went back to a traditional crew.
The botom line is that football is watched by football fans. Why cater to the casual viewer who could really care less and who would NOT likely buy the products advertised before and during games? REAL football fans like to watch someone who knows and talks the game of football (Tom Jackson, Mark Schlereth, and Sean Salisbury are debateable). AND it's an added plus if they played the game and were good at it (once again, Jackson, Schlereth, and Salisbury are debateable).
FOX has held down the ratings for forever and a day. They KNOW what the FAITHFUL viewers want; four guys who either know the game of football inside and out and/or have played the game at it's highest level AND have a hot-looking flirty babe doing some meaningless weather report. FOX GETS IT!
Sadly, ESPN, ABC, and even NBC...or CBS...or back to NBC...then back over to CBS again will always be a step behind in the ratings.
