What's funny about that is that the Raiders expect Art Shell to bring them discipline, but your worst years penalty wise came under Art Shell before.
Being tough is fine and we all love great hits, but that's not why you guys have been penalty prone.

Plus, when you're a winning team like Madden's teams were, being penalized was an afterthought. Even madden said it himself, he didn't mind aggressive penalties. You make it up on the next set of downs. It's stupid penalties, the false starts and offsides that get frustrating. I still remember Howie Long jumping offsides 2 or 3 times in the 93 divisional playoff game as the Bills drove for the winning score. They may have scored anyway, but Long made their job easier. Those are stupid penalties (Sorry Howie, but you blew it that drive.)
But the hits of a Tatum, mauling a QB to the ground, ripping off helmets, that was Raider football that rarely, if ever, cost us a game. Knoll called tghe Raiders secondary a "criminal element." All it did was add to the legend. We set a tone: We're coming after you hard and we're going to beat you
despite the rules.
Art's teams still had success with the penalties but in some cases, especially against teams that are better than you, 15 yards might as well be a 50 yard bomb.
