Phillip Rivers: the Chargers' version of Kerry Collins?

Curious: do you think Rivers will put up JUST good enough #s to not get benched, but will end up winning only say 5 games?
I never watched him in college, I know absolutely nothing about him.

Arch Monkey, are you still hanging out down here in the bowels of RF.NET? And are you really here to ask Raider fans about charger players? Lol, my brother is a big time Charger fan so this is going to be fun. I commend your team for what it has built while staying 25 plus million under the cap, Chargers will win more than 5 games even if I was their QB and Rivers is an unknown quantity except that Schottenheimer really seems to like him. My hope is that he goes through some tough growing pains and F**ks your whole season up. And oh yeah, google search "Phillip Rivers", "Chargers" and you will know his college history.

Now my question to you, seeing how you are one of the more knowledgeable Charger fans I have ever run into, your team was clearly the best in the division last year, why did you suck and miss the playoffs, and get schooled by Denver, and especially Miami when you needed that win? Why so sucky Arch Monkey?

Chargers choked; what can I say? Look at a majority of the losses. they were simply a matter of choking. Stupid plays at stupid times. Chargers did get pounded in the last games of the season vs KC and Denver which was insult to injury.

Reason I asked about Rivers, its always interesting to see what others, aside from Charger fans, think. Regardless of how much you hate the team in question.

Thats cool Arch Monkey, I haven't been impressed with Rivers yet but I can only surmise that he has outplayed Brees in camp. Marty wanted him in even after Brees led you guys to the playoffs. I didn't get that, it took a mutiny of the players who wanted to stick with Brees I think to back Marty down. Marty has what he wants now, it will be interesting to see what happens. I thought the biggest mistake made last year by you guys came early in the season, as in the first game. For some reason Marty decided he didn't want to use his most potent weapon, LaDanian Tomlinson, I thought that hurt you guys in a couple of games, Also you had Gates on suspension and I thought that hurt too. I am not saying he shouldn't have been on suspension, I'm just saying it screwed with you guys. Marty needs to let Tomlinson do what he wants to do, and thats break ann NFL rushing record, that was big sites set by Tomlinson and it was crushed nearly before the season got started. Also, its good to be under the cap, but it is nonsensical to have a team as good as yours and stay that far under for continuous years. If we were in your situation, we would be bringing in some serious horses to make a hell of a push for the superbowl. Your management seems content, and doesn't want to spend the money. As always with the Chargers, it goes back to ownership, the guy doesn't even want to be in San Diego, and my conspiracy theory is that he is waiting until he can move, and then he will unload all that money for the new home of the Chargers can be excited and watch them push for a superbowl. Just my two cents.

Thats why it is great being a Raider, our ownership is always moving heaven and earth to bring the guys in to get us to a superbowl every year, thats why we fans dont like this offseason because it appears we are taking a different approach, and we already sucked last year so we want some big improvement, aint happenin though. We will see what it is like this coming year. Tomlinson is just the modern version of Dan Fouts. You get an incredible player, and then let him suffer with a cast of players that will only allow the team to be pretty good, but not dominant. That way, the ownership doesn't have to spend a lot of money, and they still fill the seats. See how that works? If I was a Charger fan I would demand that those A holes spend that fu**in money and bring in the players to win a superbowl NOW! If they dont, look for a very upset Tomlinson, aint no fun to be on a team that isn't trying their best to win.....it all.

I can answer that question. I was a beast in college and I'll be a beast in the NFL.

..and the recent tradition of the Bolts smacking on the Raiders will continue.

The Chargers getting rid of Brees was the greatest off season move the Raiders didn't have to make. Here's to 10 more season's without a playoff win Dolt fans!

ok

We will be good to go with Rivers. More free agency and the draft means we all do not have a good picture of what is still to come. We are loking pretty good so far.

I'm a guy who really dispises the Bolts and a large majority of their fans. So with that said.......

The Bolts are gonna be even tougher to beat now with Rivers at the helm. In the long run this was by far the best option. AJ Smith might be taking some heat over this, but I respect the guys eye for talent and the "I'm in charge" attitude. I love how he pisses Marty off! He's a no nonsense, intelligent guy.

To me Brees was an adequate, capable QB. He's not ever gonna be the guy to lift a team and carry them all the way to the Superbowl. He's a guy who had quality talent around him and he deserves credit for making the most of it. He's never been a good deep ball passer, his deep out passes are shaky at best. Now I'm very curious to see what they look like after the injury.

With Rivers, you won't need to rely on LT nearly as much. Unlike Brees, Rivers is the type of QB that can carry a team. He makes all the throws and seems intelligent. If I were a Bolt fan, I wouldn't be worried at all with the departure of Brees. In the long run Rivers is by far the better choice. He may hit a few bumps in the road along the way, but with LT the Chargers will overcome some of those. I expect Rivers to be a top 5 passer year-in and year-out throughout his career.

I hate saying it....but that's the way I see it.

I don't really care about commenting on other teams, especially perennial losers like the Chargers, but I do agree with your assessment. Even though Brees spanked us pretty good, he is not the most talented QB on the field; he was good because he talent around him and he was good at using it. I have a friend in North Carolina who insists Rivers was the best QB drafted in 2004.

That said, it really doesn't matter to me because we need to take care of our own team. Who cares what the Dolts do? We need to address our own situation. We are in a situation now where we don't have a single QB on the roster who has any business starting in the NFL. And if we don't fill that hole soon, we won't be able to beat any AFC West teams, even if they are QB'd by AJ Feely.

First the Chargers made a stupid mistake and went with a guy who they "think" might be a good QB in the NFL in Rivers. The hargers let go Brees, who has been intigrated into their offense and has fit in quite well. It took several years, but Brees found his rythm. So, now the Chargers want to start all over with Rivers, who may never find the rythm Brees had?? And what's worse is the fact that the Raiders let Brees go. I know Brees was asking for a lot of cash, especially coming off of surgery, but who else is out there that will help the Raiders get back into post season? That's all I"m saying guys.
