It really saddens me to see people on here who give no credit to Gruden. He was the best coach we have had in a while and got us back to a level of respectability. To think that wasn't his team in the superbowl is actually ludicrous when you think about it. And honestly Gruden took Tony Dungy's defense to the Superbowl and brought his offense to Tampa with him ....sad to say but letting him go for whatever reason was really a big mistake I think not only would we have won that Superbowl in San Diego against Tampa but if Gruden would have stayed we may have had the chance to at least be in another the last 3 years. Now I love what Mr. Davis has done with this team and he is the reason we have our championships but in this case he may have made another mistake just like he said he did with Shell years before.

Die hard, sit back and take some muscle relaxers or something. We'll be fine. We hit a dry spell but I'm pretty excited about this coming season. Al has made some good moves since the SB in 2002, give me a fvcking break bro...

When we were in the Super Bowl, we had energetic coaches and upper management (Jon Gruden, Bruce Allen). But Al Davis threw them out because Al likes to run this team like an emperor, and won't let the coaches/management do their thing. There comes a time when a leader has to step down or relinquish his power, and that time should have been 5 years ago. As it stands, Al Davis refuses to give up any of his power, and that is severely hampering our team.

A good team needs good coaching and good upper management. Davis is not managing the team well, and we'll never have good coaching because Davis wants too much control and nobody really good wants to coach here. So for that reason, the Raiders will never be great until the day Al Davis relinquishes his power or steps down.

Al just needs to hang it up and stop running this team into the ground.

Contrary to popular belief, Al didn't run Gruden off. Al offered him one of the biggest contracts that a Raider Coach has ever been offered. Gruden wanted to leave, wanted to get to Tampa to get closer to his parents and because he saw himself as having a bigger role somewhere else. Al did what every owner would do, make lemonade out of lemons. He traded him for picks and cash.

Sure Al could have given him full control here and he might have stayed...might have stayed. But, we all know that Al has never given anyone full control of his team. Just like I've never given anyone full control of my business, or a million other business owners like me. Its ours, we don't want someone else running what we have built. If there are mistakes to be made then by hook or crook I'm going to be the one to make them.

Diehard,
While I can't disagree with some of your points, I do need to voice my opinion.
Truth is. Al Davis has been the Raiders for most of our lives. Since we were watching as kids in our first jersey, or holding our first Raider football card. It's been like that for all of us. If we've always been a Raider fan.

Truth is...Most of us have neither the knowledge nor the fortitude to know and run a professional football team. Let alone our Oakland Raiders. I'm going to defer to the old, evil guy in black.

Hind sight is 20/20. And we're all critical, that's what make's this forum work. Discussion.

But I will always believe in AD.
In Al I Trust.

It was Al Davis being a control freak that made Gruden not want to coach here, and the reason why we've only been able to get puppets as coach since then. We'll never have a great coaching staff thanks to Al's control freak nature.

Wrong.

Gruden was the best coach this franchise has ever had. And Al sent him packing before he had a chance to fulfill his destiny. Oh, the Lombardis we could have had.

Al Davis is one of the most remarkable men of the 20th Century. But his refusal to let go now is tarnishing his legacy. Since Gruden left, we have finished last in our division for three straight years. We are on our third coach since Gruden left. We now have a coach who was clearly a last choice, who has not been on the sidelines for five years. This coach's first move is to hire an offensive coordinator who has not been in the NFL for twelve years and was drummed out of the last two football jobs he's had.

Al Davis is ruining this franchise now and I wish he would retire.

Please..Chucky picked a fight that he was not about to win...or cared if he did! Gru was clearly shopping himself around..and he got out..which is WTF he was looking for!!!!! Al is the one that went & got Gannon Don't kid yourself...Gannon had as much to do with Gru's success as Gru had to do with Rich's.

I wish Al would take A back seat and let A head coach run the team his way not Al's way, if Al needs that much control maybe he should coach!! I know Al needs to give input and im all for that but Al gives to much input and doesnt let the coaches make there own decisions!! Just my opinion!!
