Drew Brees

I debated on whether to start a new thread on this, but I think this question deserves a thread of its own. It doesn't seem appropriate at this point to talk direct smack re the Chargers v. the Raiders because the two teams are headed in different directions for the rest of the season. I feel for you guys because as a Chargers fan for 25 years I know the pain.

But I do want to ask this question: Do the Raiders respect Drew Brees?

Here is a story in today's San Diego Union-Trib. It seems the former Boilermaker gets no respect from Raiders fans, who like to deride Brees for just about everything, from the lack of his vertical stature to his facial birthmark.

But Brees is 5-2 against the Raiders, including a 3-1 record in Oakland. After Sunday, he will most likely be 6-2 lifetime (nothing is guaranteed). He's had his best day as a pro v. the Raiders (Halloween 2004).

I know Raiders fans respect LT and Gates.

So my question is, why don't Raiders fans respect Brees? And what will it take for Brees to get that respect from the followers of the Silver and Black?

He has my total respect. Eventhough I hate the chargers and that piece of s*$#t coach, I would like for us to pick up Brees if the chargers let him go.

Brees will stay in San Diego. Despite the occassional lingering press report to the contrary, there is no QB controversy in San Diego with Philip Rivers. Brees is going to be the franchise QB for this generation of the team. Rivers will be traded. But I don't see the Bolts' brass letting Rivers go to an AFC West team.

I have been to Chargers boards thta dont even respect what Brees has done for your own team. I still hear grumblings of Rivers being the man there.

Punisher, you are absolutely correct. At the beginning of this summer, after Brees' 2004 Pro Bowl, 12-win, 27-TD, 7-INT season, there was a strong contingent of Chargers fans at the signonsandiego forum (you've been there) who were sure Rivers was going to upstage Brees in training camp. After Rivers failed to make any noise in training camp, or assert himself in preseason games, there were those who were sure Rivers would take over for Brees after a few games. Now that Brees is proving 2004 was not a one-year fluke, his critics (among Chargers fans) have been reduced to a few diehards. Some of these aforementioned fans at signonsandiego.com have conceded they were wrong about Brees and now respect him and believe he is capable of getting the Chargers to a Super Bowl. But even now, after all that Brees has proven, there are a few diehards at signonsandiego.com who can't bear the thought of Brees as the Chargers' franchise QB. I pity them.
