Genesis of "The Nation"

Interesting stuff from author John Mehno on the origin of the "[insert team name here] Nation". I'm surprised, I honestly thought it originated in Oakland:

http://www.pghsports.com/2004-Issues.../04110101.html

"Phil Musick addressed the issue in a Dec. 3, 1972 Pittsburgh Press column:

'This is a football town. The Pirates win all the time and that's fine. But this town has thick wrists and hot blood and men who when they bump one another on the street say, 'Watch it, Mac,' instead of 'Pardon me' and in a place where some of the women even wash down their whiskey with beer, the gut game is football.'

The producers at NFL Films studied the phenomenon of fans swarming Three Rivers from all directions and pronounced them the 'Steeler Nation,' a name that would stick.

It was a great place to be. The lower stands at Three Rivers literally rocked when emotions peaked. "

Ugh. I hate the Squeelers. I'm disappointed to learn they started the "Nation" designator.

Apparently NFL Films dubbed them "Steeler Nation" before either Raider Nation or Red Sox Nation came to fruition.

A pity: Pissburgh is a steaming dung hole. Just ask Bengal Dave.

Yeah, interesting point. I suppose present reality is ultimately more important than being the first, which is why Steeler Nation is not as prevalent a term as Raider Nation, even though Steeler Nation was first.

A pox on Pissburgh in any event.

Someone in the Raiders organization coined the term,"The Raider Nation",in the early '60's.
The team was new,and they needed a marketing term to garner interest in them,so the people in the bay area would start to support them.
We've been called that even years before Al Davis won majority ownership the team.Sorry, but the term "Raider Nation" was the first of those concepts.

I live in north east Ohio, about a 5 hour drive from Pittsburg. I remember when the Steelers sucked. I have somewhat of a grudging respect for the Steelers and what they have accomplished over the years. I cannot say the same for the Browns. God, how I despise the freakin Clowns!

The Steelers are a damn good team... even though I do bleed silver and black, I can't deny that. I think most Raider fans can identify with the type of team the Steelers are... kick ass and in your face... the kind of team we are, or at least, used to be.

Who cares? I think the term 'Raider Nation' is a little on the goofy side anyway, as i would Steeler nation, Red Sox nation, whatever...

I'll stick with Lifelong Raider fan to describe myself.

Actually, the Steelers have an impressive natiowide following.

Which makes beating them all the more satisfying.

Wnyraider has a good point, though: labels don't make the fan.

I live in this ****hole of a city & since they got RoethlisChoker, they have been using this Stooler Nation crap!!! I figure it's just all their BANDWAGON fans trying to copy the Raiders as they always try to copy other things...Example: West Coast Choppers...These fools are sporting this shirt because they are so fascinated by the West Coast & California....

Bottom line is, Pittsburgh fell off the face of the map back in the 70's and they are trying their hardest to fit in with the rest of the Nation....

FUKK THE SQUEELERS!!!
