(Not being a fan of either team, I hoped both Denver and Cleveland would both lose), but I did hear ole Marty make a statement that may shed some light on why he never has - and probably never will - win the Big One.
Duirng the drive, Denver converts on a third and long - maybe 19 - around mid-field and Shottenheimer says, "At that point, I began to get concerned." If I was a NFL owner and paying someone big bucks to coach my team, I would want him to be concerned the whole game. Alas, poor San Diego. Wonder if ole Marty roamed the sidelines during last season's playoff game, unconcerned until the Jets went for the field goal?

Actually it's exactly the opposite problem. If you know Marty at all, you'd know that his problem is being way too concerned and way too uptight. Kind of like how rizzdork up there is perpetually all wound up.
Marty's playoff record is miserable because his sphincter squeezes so tight for an important game that it starts choking off oxygen to his brain. It was when he finally loosened up last year and let others make decisions that the team started moving the ball consistently. If the game plan was totally up to Marty we'd be punting on first down to prevent a possible fumble or interception.
If you rewind the Jets playoff game, it wasn't lost when the Jets made their field goal. It was lost when Marty-ball was resurrected after a 4 month hiatus. His ass puckered up so tight when we were driving for the win that he called three straight predictable running plays up the middle on 1st down for no gain to set up a long, high stakes field goal for a rookie.
When everyone in the stadium knows you are going to run up the middle, you might try passing maybe. A safe end-zone fade or a simple crossing route for 8 yards would have won that game. That's what Marty doesn't seem to fully grasp yet. Maybe he learned his final lesson from the Jets game, we'll find out this year.
I'm a true blue Charger fan, but I'm not myopic. Marty is a solid coach but with serious control issues.
