Why the Chargers are dominating the AFC West now
Exceptionally good decisions on draft day.

In this ESPN article, Scouts Inc. analyzes the 2005 draft and determines that Shawne Merriman was the best player chosen that year. The Chargers drafted Merriman with the 12th overall pick in the 1st round.

They rank Luis Castillo at No. 13. The Chargers drafted Castillo at No. 28 in the first round.

And they rank Vincent Jackson at No. 28. The Chargers drafted Jackson with the 29th pick in 2nd round, 61st overall.

They rank Kirk Morrison at No. 23, where he woulda/shoulda been drafted by the Raiders instead of in the 2nd round.

Please note that each of the Chargers' first three picks in that draft are now ranked higher than where they were selected, and that the Bolts got three 1st-round caliber players in that draft.

Quality drafting. That's how you construct a good team from the ground up; a team that is built to remain one of the league's best for a long stretch.

Yup, has to be disheartening building a potent team like that and never winning anything that matters. At the end of the day, they will be remembered as just another team, not a champion.
