Yeah, it's definitely something that should be 'tinkered with'.
Most of my tutorials don't include some of the visual stuff I do to improve the effect.
I use the eraser tool a lot on the subsequent layers so they don't obscure the player image, or the background.
By using the eraser tool, you can get a custom result and allow yourself to include the "Plastic effect" only on the player himself without overlapping the edges.
The eraser tool helps you get a nice blend of effect and original pic.
This step is what I usually omit because there are so many directions you can take it from there.
One tip I would have for you on this particular attempt:
Keeping your original player layer separate, once you've applied the plastic layer above it, invert and use the selection from the original player cutout and delete the excess edges of plastic.
Then you could use the eraser tool to eliminate some of the more obstructive portions of plastic effect. (face and numbers)
