No more "Give us 17 points a game." It's put up or shut up time now. Ryan's had 5 years now to get this D up to par, and I think Al Davis is maybe starting to lose his patience with Ryan and placing him, and his D, under the gun. I can only hope with the Hall acquisition that this means the Raiders will finally be using more blitzing packages, like some zone-blitzing for a change to makeover the defense's vanilla schemes.

I think this offseason so far has proven that Al is making a concerted effort to vastly improve the D, maybe in part to compensate for the fact that we will virtually be starting a rookie QB. A good running game and a staunch defense are a rookie QB's best friend. We've got the running game covered, the defense remains to be seen, but at least pieces of the puzzle are being added. Maybe Al has finallly just had enough after these last 5 years of futility. Nobody likes to lose, especially Al Davis.

This also brings me to the current situation with Aso. I think it's pretty apparent, at least IMO, with the money that has been spent by Al and the Raiders organization this off-season, that Nnamdi was probably offered a financially lucrative contract, to which Aso and his agent have yet to sign. The reasons may be two-fold. Possibly Nnamdi and his agent are currently looking for contract similar to the one that Nate Clements received from the 49ers, or Nnamdi was waiting to see what FA signings, player acquisitions and draft picks were going to be made by the Raiders to improve the team before signing his name on the dotted line. Either way I think Nnamdi is a greater player than Hall, but Hall can legitimately be considered a top 5 CB. By trading for Hall, Al has essentially covered his losses should Aso not resign with the team, and if Aso does sign a long-term contract, then the Raiders have the best CB tandem in the league.
Excellent take... and I concur.

I like the move but why give him a deal that is close to the one Samuel got from Philly and not give the money to Asomugha?

Acquiring Hall will be another reason for teams to run the ball against us. Once we fix up that D-line, the defense will be completely set.

great write up. At first when the move was announced, i kinda didn't want it to be true but i thought about it for a day and i think this move really can benefit us greatly when it happens. If we can improve that defensive line after through the draft maybe, we are gonna have one hell of a defense> but i think this is a good move for us since it was only for a second. Hopefully we can get Aso signed also

Don't like the move at all..we have Routt and Washington who play okay to well...corners get better as passrush improves..like we saw when Burgess and Sapp where laying all out in the past. If anything we need a guy in the merriman mold. We should grab the best DL guy outthere during the draft. and look for talent in the cut poule after the draft...i see no sence in bring in a corner that will not have an imediate impact on our overall play.

I'm not sure if we mortgaged our future (the 34th selection is high for a guy on the last year of his contract) but next season is looking intriguing to me. I've always liked a bad-ass secondary but I'm hoping we can generate a pass rush and not keep them on an island.

We should be getting JaMarcus some weapons, but I think the 4th pick (assuming we keep it) will be DE Vernon Gholston Ohio State.

Imagine two solid passrushers (Burgess and Gholston) with a swing man who can bring the heat every now and then (Tommy Kelly) backed by two speedy linebackers (Howard and Morrison) with a ballhawking secondary (Asomugha, Hall, Huff, Wilson, Washington)

This defense could be JaMarcus' greatest ally!

Well think about this if we acquire hall we will have a pretty good secondary which means if we cover well then where do they throw the ball? Now they may think lets just run but if we have two of the most talented corners in the nfl then all we need to do is play man to man with help of a safety and stack up against the run...but i do agree we need to fix our d-line

Yes, but the Achilles heel of this D since 2003 has been their inability to stuff the run.

Yet two guys who have been a part of that -- Sands and Kelly -- got raises in back-to-back years. And where is the upgrade there?

I totally agree but think about this if we have these two great corners that can be left on an island with a receiver then we can stack up against the run. Now this is why i think D. McFadden would be a good draft pick yea i know we have Fargas but how great would it be to have two great backs and that being said we can acquire an amazing D tack in next years draft or in the fourth round of this years but i think we should get an offensive line mine in the fourth round.
