Practice Squad

What is the purpose of the practice squad? I noticed a couple of people were relieved that Antajj cleared waivers (there's another question!) but from what I can read being on the practice squad gives the Raiders no protection from him being picked up by another team.

Is it just a way of having extra players become familiar with the schemes in case someone on the roster goes on IR - but with the accepted risk that they may go elsewhere at some stage during the season?

i believe the practice squad is very important, especially 4 the titans last year ;)
