I still believe...
With the talks getting so far along I still think Al & Petrino make work it out. Shell goes upstairs to prepare to run the Raiders after Al. The one thing we need the most is offense and the Petrino has that down. Not only that but he has the chance to bring his QB (Brohm) who already knows his offense if he chooses not to go with Walter.
At Louisville Petrino will never get the recognition that most coaches strive for. There is discussion that even if they don't lose this season they might not get a shot at a national championship. So he won't stay there forever anyway. If he comes in and just makes the offense avg then we have a shot at the playoffs. If he fails then he could always use the excuse every other coach uses when it doesn't work out in Oakland and go back to college a richer man. Blast away but theories like this help me believe that Al was not crazy enough to think that Walsh would improve our offense... Quote:

I'll believe this when it actually happens. I'm sure BP has an "out" clause in his contract that would allow him to go to a NFL Pro-level job, so it can happen.
If Louisville can't play for the NC, i can see him getting pissed off and wanting to leave knowing he can't beat the BCS system. If Louisville plays for the NC and loses, i can see him wanting to get out of there to escape a negative situation. If Louisville plays for the NC and wins, i can see him wanting to leave cuz he wouldn't have anything to prove anymore at the College Level. But, except for the firing of Shanahan and Joe Bugel, this is an organization not known for quick moves when it comes to management. They seem to wait a season too long when making a move in this area. |

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. For anyone that saw Shell's press conference this week you saw that he's already talking about etting this team turned around before leaving the postition. So it's not too far off in my opinion. I also say that hiring and keeping Walsh makes sense in one regard, that he was the only OC that Art could bring in who understood and was ok with it being a one year deal.

UGGHH, why is it people attach themselves to every coach in college who has a year of two of success and then suggests they can coach the Oakland Raiders, or any team at the pro level. Please please stop. It's a totally different ballgame and the % of success is worse then the transition from college to pro's for players.
I have not looked up the actual numbers, but it must be in the 5-10% range. Just because he wins some games with an average team in a horrible conference does NOT mean he is able to coach an NFL team.

Please stop- Petrino is no cure for a bunch of mediocre talented guys calling themselves an o-line- they simply lack heart- and you can't teach heart. Heck- exhume Vince Lombardi or Tom Landry- they wouldn't have kept these guys on the field longer than a quarter sorry as these guys are playing.

Also we should never draft a QB in the first RD as only 5% of the QBs drafted in the 1st Rd have won a SB with the team that drafted them in the last 20 years. Get the picture? You can pull stats to justify any position you want to take! There are 32 head coaches in the NFL so in reality only 3% are successful every year leaving another 97% that were not successful with success being defined as winning it all. Judge the man based upon his ability and not the failures of others...

It leaves him right where he was in my eyes. He is an offensive minded coach who has a great offense but lacking defense on his college team. Would that hurt him as a Raider HC? Nope because we have Rob Ryan who is doing an excellent job with our defense. Petrino comes in and fixes the offense to where they can average 2 TDs a game then we have a chance at big things. Right now we are having trouble scoring 3 points!
