49er's leaving San Fancisco

49ers leaving San Francisco

By News Wire Reports
November 9, 2006
SAN FRANCISCO - The 49ers ended negotiations with the city about building a new stadium and plan to move to Santa Clara or somewhere else in California, The Associated Press learned Wednesday.
Owner John York notified Mayor Gavin Newsom of the team's decision earlier Wednesday, a city official close to the negotiations told the AP on condition of anonymity.

Team spokesman Aaron Salkin declined to comment.

The sides had been talking during the past few months about building a privately financed stadium at Candlestick Point that was going to be part of the city's bid for the 2016 summer Olympics.

The current lease at Candlestick runs through the 2008 season.

The stadium at Candlestick is one of the most run-down in the league, leading to the team's desire to seek a new stadium with revenue-generating suites and luxury boxes.

The 49ers' headquarters are based in Santa Clara, about 30 miles south of San Francisco.

Hmmmm… I could be totally wrong but this sounds like posturing to me. Sounds as if they are “breaking up” with S.F. in hopes they will come running back to them with some offer, the whole thing sounds like a negotiation ploy.

I heard a few months back from a friend of mine that lives in San Jose that they had already broken ground on the A’s new stadium but he never mentioned anything about the 49ers. It seems to me that because of how small the Santa Clara valley is compared to the Los Angeles basin and just how expensive a small piece of property is their, it just does not SEEM to add up to me. However even thou Fremont is not quite as expensive as Santa Clara they are if you’ll excuse the pun, in the same… ballpark. I guess it could happen.

I wonder if in reality thou they are using the Santa Clara deal as a bargaining tool to drive S.F. and L.A. into a bidding war frenzy. I would LOVE to see the 49ers move to L.A., it would be sooooo SWEAT to slap down all their fans after all these years. They called my team the “traders” I’ll call theirs the “gold-diggers”.

According to their web-site they are not going to leave the bay area and want the stadium built and ready for the 2012 season… almost 6 years from now?! They say they will be know as the S.F. whiners even thou they will supposedly be playing in Santa Clara. They make it sound as if it is a done deal, HOWEVER, it DOES take 23 of the 32 owners to approve the move otherwise… forget it.

It still sounds like posturing to me, but I could be wrong.

Decided to check out NFL.com, according to the NFL here are some quotes that I found interesting…

“The 49ers have given up hope of building a state-of-the-art stadium in San Francisco and are CONSIDERING a move to suburban Santa Clara.”

“Now the team is SEEKING to build a new stadium in Santa Clara, near the Great America amusement park and the Santa Clara Convention Center.”

“We have been LOOKING to expand our entertainment options in the Great America-Convention Center area for years, and this stadium can be a great addition," Santa Clara mayor Patricia Mahan said in a statement issued by the team.”

“The 49ers said if they are unable to move forward with the project in Santa Clara, they would look at other cities in the area.”

As it stands now CLEARLY you can see the whiners and the NFL are not on the same page. According to the official whiners website they make it sound like it’s a done deal but reading the official NFL website they make it sound as if nothing is set in stone. Hmmm….

I'm sure it takes longer to go threw some bay briges then what it takes to take highway 101 south from candelstic to santa clara. not that much of a move for the fans to suffer but SF would loose on the tax the team brings in.

IF this goes through it could be huge for the Raiders. Control of the Bay area market. That means they could push for a new stadium, corporations would be more interested in the Raiders luxury boxes etc. Could potentially be a windfall for the Raiders.

This was just on ESPN and wow what a shock. I was more worried about the raiders moving again than niners lol. For those who dont know Santa Clara is part of SJ (like a suburb/extension although they might not admit it lol) But the niners just gave me my christmas wish, heres to them moving to LA lol. also remember those prick niner fans that called us traders when their team moves to LA, pay backs a b*tch!

I just want to give a great big shoutout to my man John York for moving his punka$$ franchise out of SF and further dow towards the outskirts of the South Bay! All my fellow Raider fans from the 'Town' and East Bay have had to listen to our burgandy and gold homies smacktalk about our move to LA 20 years ago and the occasional rumors of us leaving again to become the "Hayward Raiders" or the "San Jose Raiders". In light of our troubles, the Whiners leaving gave me something to smile about today. Just goes to prove what comes around goes around.
