I am starting this Rumor.

I was a huge supporter of Doug Gabriel, and was sad to see him go. I know this is far fetched (or is it?), but could this have happened?

Al has a meeting with Shell, and they discuss the future of theam, and how we could get the most of the people we were planning on cutting anyway. They come up with a special plan involving Porter. Shell laughs, but agrees that it might just work.

Shell has a meeting with Porter and explains the details. Porter likes the plan, and thinks he can pull it off. They agree, shake hands in agreement on the long term plan, and prepare "The Act".

Shell yelling at Porter in the "meeting" was part of the act. The act was so good, the team mates fell for it. Media gobbled it up. No one knew of this plan besides Al, Shell, and Porter. It was a buzz all over sporting news across the country.

So Porter seeks a "trade", and various teams contact the Raiders. The Raiders were never really serious about trading Porter, and this explains the unreasonable requests the Raiders made for Porter. They would casually bring up Doug Gabriel as another option for trade, but not really push it just yet.

Porter continues the act, and the team mates getting pissed at him, and voicing their opinions only made the whole thing seem even more real.

The Raider start Gabriel on the first team as the 2nd WR to show that they have the confidence in him to take that role. Give him playing time, and let agents see him in action more. Agents thought "Wow, maybe we SHOULD take a look at Gabriel after all."

The Raiders then contact the teams that were originally interested in Porter, and offer them Doug Gabriel. "He is our #2 receiver, and we have shown we have confidence in his ability. He is currently #2 on our depth chart. We just can't afford all these receivers, it's our loss, and your gain."

Al Davis, Art Shell, and Jerry Porter, sit back and "hi-five" each other behind closed doors.

Porter - "I can't believe that worked. Everyone fell for it."

Art Shell - "I told you it would. Now get back to work!"

Mr. Davis - "That money belt was the perfect touch. You can keep that. It's on me."

I am sure there is no truth to this, but hey.... you never know!

Nope Porter needed this to get his head straight, plain and simple. Shell was right for his action, nothing planned like that.

U actually make some good points, so it ain't far fetched. However it still seems unlikely they would orchestrate a whole scene to get a measly FIFTH rounder for Gabriel.
