Minn only asking a 2nd rnd. for Dante

AP reports the Vikings are gauging QB Daunte Culpepper's trade value around the NFL, a person with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday -- confirming a decision triggered when Culpepper demanded that his 2006 compensation be more than doubled. Apparently, the Vikings are seeking a second-round draft pick for Culpepper, but that asking price could not be confirmed. A trade for so little compensation would conclude a stunning fall for Culpepper, 29, who put up MVP-caliber numbers as recently as 2004. Baltimore, Miami, Oakland and the New York Jets are among those teams who are expected to pursue quarterbacks this offseason. Culpepper, who fired agent Mason Ashe last month, represented himself during a gathering that also included owner Zygi Wilf, other members of his ownership group, HC Brad Childress and Vice President of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski. Culpepper, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, asked that approximately $10 million be added to his contract this season -- increasing his total 2006 compensation to a staggering $18 million. Wilf angrily turned down Culpepper's request, and it is believed that no substantive communication has taken place since. The disagreement is the largest impetus for soliciting trade offers, but Culpepper might also be seeking a fresh start after suffering a major injury to his right knee and being charged with three misdemeanors in connection with an alleged Oct. 6 sex party on Lake Minnetonka. Culpepper, due a $6 million bonus on March 14, faces the task of learning Childress' west-coast offense while being unable to practice until summer at the earliest. A team taking Culpepper would have to view him as a starter for 2007 and consider playing time in 2006 a bonus.

A 2nd rounder in my book is WAY too much. Here in Oakland we need our draft picks. Al Davis & our staff had a fairly nice draft last season. With draft picks I feel they could do it again. I think at the highest a 3rd rounder and maybe derrick gibson. That would be a good deal. We'd save money on that deal. But No Way, not a 2nd.

I'd trade Collins and a 5th for Dante.

We really need all of our draft picks though.

If it wasnt for the Unkown as far as how injured daunte is and how he will be coming back i would say do it in a minute. he throw 39 TD's in 2004, 39!

Sounds almost like the stuff Al Davis was pulling Last year. Trading jolley, p-buch, our first, napolean harris, and bringing in Kirk Morrison, Fabian Washington, and Randy Moss!!!

It's a little hypothetical, but thats the Beauty of Al Davis, would you really be surprised if he did something like that!!!

Good Post, interesting thoughts. Hypothetical, but Good Post!!!

To me, assuming he's healthy or well on his way, this is very appealing. If you have a chance to add a franchise QB for a 2nd round draft pick to a team like ours with our QB situation being what it is, you almost have to do it. We pull the trigger, release Collins, and allow ourselves time to see what Walter can be, not just from an ability standpoint but from a health standpoint. This move would immediately make us playoff contenders.

I have confidence in him, but that would put alot of pressure on Rob Ryan. We could do this, and pull it off, the secret would be our defense. If we focus on defense, give Rob Ryan more tools to use, in FA & Draft, we could do this. That way it would lessen the load on Walter, knowing there's room for error, because our defense has his back!!!!

Interesting but if we go this route, Load the Defense guys!!!!

Man, if Daunte was healthy I would do this in a second, a young franchise QB for a second round pick would be a steal. No one knows how the second round pick is going to turn out, assuming Daunte is healthy we know exactly what we are getting there.

Man, I could'nt agree more. Statistic show that even most QB's picked in the first round don't cut it. The toughest possition to draft no doubt. If we can afford to pick up his contract(I'm sure Al can come up with something)it's a bargain(geez for a 2nd). Moss said it himself. It would be a cinderella story!

The money would be the biggest hold up besides the injury. A 2nd rounder only would be very tempting.

how many of our second round picks in the past have made a big impact? u guyz are really trippin on this, once daunte catches fire next year everyone will feel stupid for doubting him and us not taking a chance.

I would do it the only thing that worries me is the injury. Maybe we do the trade, keep Collins & start him for a few games then when Daunte is healthy put him in. I don't know what's gonna happen but it's just a suggestion.
