Although some league insiders supposedly are poking fun at the Oakland Raiders' ongoing search for a head coach, we've got a feeling that Count Chocula has a surprise buried at the bottom of the cereal box.

We don't know what it is, but we can't imagine that the appearance that the team has no top-of-the-list candidates really means that there are no top-of-the-list candidates.

Rod Marinelli, we've heard, was never a serious contender for the job; instead, the Raiders were interested in making him the team's defensive coordinator. Ditto for Al Saunders, who didn't get an offer despite rumors to the contrary.

James Lofton has interviewed, but he's not ready for a job at that level. Plus, his history of sexual assault allegations from the 1980s (he never was convicted) could prove to be problematic from a P.R. perspective.

Bobby Petrino of Louisville was interviewed, and then he declared that he was staying with the Cardinals. Translation -- the Raiders told him that he wouldn't be getting an offer.

Rick Neuheisel is a possibility. As is Art Shell. We likewise won't rule out the Meathead, Mike Tice, although it might be hard for receiver Randy Moss to warm up to the guy who shipped him out of Minnesota.

Or it could be that the Raiders are secretly talking to a college coach who is putting the final touches on his recruiting class. Come February 1, the recruits sign their letters of intent -- and the coach is free to bolt.

But who could that be? Oklahoma's Bob Stoops? Iowa's Kirk Ferentz? West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez? Cal's Jeff Tedford?

The more obvious candidates for the position are Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Former Saints coach Jim Haslett is still available, and there's a chance that the Raiders were waiting for his other opportunities to dry up before making a play for him.

Regardless, we think that the Raiders eventually will pull off a hire that makes perfect sense in hindsight. With the firepower that the team has on offense, the franchise isn't that far away from contending -- if they have the right guy pushing the buttons.

After seeing the Steelers offense perform this season, especially in the postseason, I would like to see Ken Whisenhunt be our next head coach.

College Coach I wouldn't mind
I wouldn't mind Kirk Ferentz at all, look at what he's done for Iowa...I've seen the guy in action being a Hawkeye fan and all...taking us from a dismal season 4 years ago to almost a contender every year....All of our team is well rounded...plus look at the talents we've produced...Bob Sanders, Robert Gallery, Dallas Clark, Eric Steinbach.....the list goes on....but not only are we a well rounded team but we are labeled "O-Line University" and we all know that is what makes a great offense...So hell yeah get Ferentz...he's one coach you won't be disappointed in
