Newest defensive news from PFW

Word out of Oakland is that new DE Derrick Burgess may want to get used to experimenting between serving as a down lineman and as a rush linebacker who can drop into coverage. The reason is that while defensive coordinator Rob Ryan may be ready to utilize more 4-3 looks, he won’t stray from his background of versatility and disguising packages with a 3-4 hybrid, meaning he will need several players to adapt to different roles from one play to the next. We’re told the Raiders would be best-suited to keep third-year DE-OLB Tyler Brayton as more of a pass rusher, which could mean more responsibilities for Burgess and LBs Travian Smith, Danny Clark and Sam Williams. Brayton can hold his own in short zone coverage but was out of his comfort level when asked to cover tight ends and backs downfield last season. He seems more focused the closer he is to the line of scrimmage.

We should really just go with the 4-3 because that's what we are suited for. I know our "D" coach wants to use the 3-4 but we don't have the players for it right now.

4-3: LE= Brayton, DT= Sapp, NT= Washington, RE= Burgess
LOLB= Smith, MLB= Clark, ROLB= Williams
CB= Woodson/Buchanon, FS= Schwiegert, SS= Anderson

That's not including the draft and what other FA's we sign or players we trade but it looks pretty good right now.

PFW isn't the most reliable source.. Ryan has already stated himself that Burgess will be used strictly as a Pass Rusher with his hands in the grass.

This brings up a good question. Is it better to have a coach or coordinator that can adjust the scheme to the players he has, or is it better to simply get players that match a scheme that a coach wants to run. As for me, I would rather see a coach who can adjust to his players, and therefore extract the most out of his squad. I think that is one thing that seperates great coaches who can win anywhere, and other coaches who suck until and if they can get the right players to fit in. And I am going to mention this one more time, how come the last 4 or 5 posts I have seen from IIINAPOIII, all say 666 posts, I just saw another one a second ago.

"HYBRID" 3-4 isn't quite the same as a true 3-4... I agree it doesn't seem that we have the right personel to run a 3-4. I'll let Rob/Norv/Al make the decisions... they make the big bucks. I hate it when our players seem confused on the scheme of the D. The whole purpose of running a hybrid 3-4 is to confuse the opposing O. I think with this being our 2nd year in the same system, we will be much improved and R Ryan will be more familiar w/ the strengths and weaknesses of our D players.

i don't believe it..

with the money they gave burgess, they wont get him only too play in for dlinemen situations. He is too small for 3-4 DE.. would work good as a LB pass rusher. He was drafted as a LB, BTW..
