Woodson staying!

For all you anti Woodson fans out there, get used to the reality that he will be our starting CB this year at 10.5 mil. The reasons are simple.
{1} Al Davis will not give in and admit a mistake was made by franchising c-wood. This is Marcus Allen revisited but in a different scenario.
{2} The Postons factor. For all the hype about the average franchise tenders that CB's get { more than QB's now}, there is no market for Woodson! No team in the league is going to give up 2 first round picks for the self proclaimed "best cornerback in the league" and deal with the contract demands of a me, me, me type player whose best years are behind him and his moronic agents.
{3} Randy Moss wants Woodson on the team! Moss went out of his way to say that signing him, Lamont and keeping Woodson shows the committment to win.
In Woodson's defense, I dont care if you have Deion Sanders, Michael Haynes, Lester Hayes or whoever, if there is no pressure on the QB from your down lineman or linebackers, cornerbacks have no chance to succeed, especially with the rule changes that favor the offensive game! The Patriots won the SB with 2 rookie CB's for gods sake! If C-wood and p-buch played in that defense, I have to believe they would be better than what we have seen. With trading for Moss and signing Jordan we will score more points and control the clock with our new running game. That will help the defense. Also, playing in the second year of the same Ryan system should also help. But do we have the horses on D to go far this year? Maybe, maybe not. Will we be the Chiefs / Colts? All offense, no defense. Make the playoffs and be one and done? We will see.
Free agency and the salary cap.
I see all these rumor posts and laugh. Although we have had numerous Raider contract restructuring's, we will not be signing Ty Law, Hartwell, or any other high priced free agent. We will be signing economic type players or players recently released due to performance not matching cap numbers, players who might be productive in the right system. Tommy Polley or Anthony Simmons would fit that description. Apparently we did not sign DT Ed Jasper of the Falcons after his visit. At any rate, don't expect any more MAJOR signings! We go into battle with the team we have.
The Draft!
Even though we dont have a first pick {I would rather have Moss than anyone in this draft} remember we had 2 extra 1's and 2 extra 2's fron the Gruden trade. We just need to draft better. We could have had the defensive player of the year last year {Ed Reed}, who was drafted after P-buch and Nap Harris. We drafted Todd Marinovich instead of Brett Favre. Ouch! While there are exceptions, typically draft picks dont contribute that much there rookie year. Gallery could not even beat out Sims at left tackle and he was rated as one of the elite prospects at left tackle in the last 5 to ten years. Most try to make their mark on special teams. So dont expect rookies to save the defense this year, probably wont happen.
1st round .....Randy Moss
2nd round # 38
3rd round # 69
4th round # 99
5th round.....traded to Green Bay for safety Marques Anderson
6th round.....traded to Green Bay for safety Marques Anderson
6th round...# 167 acquired from Dallas for DE Kenyon Coleman
6th round...# 170 acquired from Arizona for DE Peppi Zellner and RB Troy Hambrick

In closing, this will be another exciting year for the Silver and Black!!!!

oregon raider, I think you have hit the nail right on the head. I completely agree with you. With what you stated, I think this will be the course of action we take for the rest of FA and the draft.

agree except that to trade him, he wouldn't have to receive 2 first round draft picks.

Pretty good analysis! I think more than likely that Woodson will be back next year!

I agree. That is probably the course of action, especially if nothing happens today (Sat)

Looking around the league and seeing the outrageous salaries for CB's, maybe Al knew what he was up against. Paying big money for lesser talent.

Unfortunately CWoods selfishness will probably be the difference in making the playoffs / or making the playoffs and going anywhere. Woods reputation for being a "leader" in the locker room only tells me that we have a lot of players who believe that they don't have to work hard to win. His popularity is a negative which is why we should have let him walk after making a fair offer.

Nothing against C-Wood, I would like to see him stay but not at this salary. We put a long term deal on the table with Bailey type money last year and he still rejected the contract. You gotta think, does he really want to be here if he keeps turning down contract offers?

ENOUGH OF THE WOODSON BASHING! All of us must be on the "what have you done for me lately kick with him" Have we all forgotten when this man had surgery to put a plate in his broken leg so he could play. I agree that over the past 2 seasons once there was nothing to play for he shut it down but RAIDERNATION COME ON! I can see where the man is coming from. I know that I've cussed many a cuss and broken many a beer glass, (or whatever was in my hand at the time) watching our GOD-AWFUL D the past 2 years. I'm not saying let him off the hook completely (make your millions, play the game, win or lose, shut up and give it 100% that's what you're paid for jackass) but grant him a little slack. I know if I went to work with blundering idiots like "NO PLAY RAY" who pointed a finger at someone else on EVERY PLAY last year, everytime he got beat, I'd be pretty pissed too. You never saw C-Wood pointin' any fingers did ya? So let's put this bashing to rest and not turn our backs on him just yet, kuz who knows, if he stays (I HOPE) and we turn this ship around and he performs well, We could all very easily fall back in love with deuce 4!
