Rumor: Raiders to cut middleton, stone, gannon; tag porter and woodson

I heard on Fox Sports Radio out here in L.A. that the raiders are about to cut Gannon Middleton and Stone which would clear about 16 mil. in cap space. According to the reports the raiders would then proceed to franchise Jerry Porter and transition tag Charles Woodson.

I hope they are doing this to buy time to negotiate long term contracts, otherwise that is a great deal of money to spend on two players.

If they cut Gannon now they would take the cap hit this year. If they wait until June 1 that will take the hit next year. Also if Gannon doesn't pass his physical they can come to an injury settlement with him after restructuring his contract. Just scenerios.

I hate seeing Gannon have to go.But I also understand that we cannot afford to haev $8M tied up in a player we're ALL unsure can play again.Maybe in the midst of offseason we can sign him again to a more friendlier contract

I'm pretty sure a team only has one tag to use between Exclusive Rights Franchise, Franchise and Transitional tags. I'm also pretty sure that even if Woodson was transitionally tagged, he'd still get the 120% of last years salary. So there is no way Woodson gets transitionally tagged since there's no benifit to it and lots of risk.

It was actually our(LA/OC AREA) FOX affiliate Xtra sports 570 Lee "HACKSAW" Hamilton and he said Porter will get the franchise tag while C-Wood will get the transition tag...

I would hate to see Rich leave. I think he deserves a better send off then just being "cut". The only condition I would want to see him leave the Raiders under is retiring as a Oakland Raider.

Finally getting rid of fat Frank. We should have cut him after last season. As for Ron Stone he had a attitude last season.

If Gannon fails his physical, which the report is he will, he will have to retire and the raiders will not take the hit until next year. It is the same thing that happened to Rod Woodson last year. I would love to see Gannon stay on as a coach of some sort, or at least sometime in the future, sign him on as a coach of some sort. But cut the rest of them, they suck.

Exactly. This is the likely scenario for Gannon. Fail the physical and take the cap hit next year.

A team can use both the Franchise Tag (not exclusive and non-exclusive) and Transition Tag in one year. Contrary to some newpapers I am pretty sure you are correct with the 120% of last year salary for the Transition Tag..

Either tag would require paying CWood 120% of last years salary since it would be higher than the money designated for either tag.

Gannon will not be cut until after June 1.
