Raiders to sign RT Shane Olivia?
from profootballtalk.com ...
Quote:
SHANE OLIVEA HAS SIGNED WITH SOMEONE
There aren’t many guys who started 57 of their first 59 games for a perennial playoff team available on the open market come June. Of course, Shane Olivea’s run as a starter ended when he was benched in November but, still, he put in enough quality work with the Chargers to get a six-year deal in 2006.
He was released at the end of February by San Diego and drew some looks from the Jets before they signed Damien Woody to play right tackle. Even with a history of back problems and some of the shorter arms in the NFL, it’s surprising that Olivea hasn’t found gainful employment for the 2008 season. Well, it would be if he hadn’t found employment with a mystery team.
The 49ers, looking for depth behind Jonas Jennings and Joe Staley, inquired about Olivea’s availability recently but, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, were told that he’d already agreed to terms with another team. He’s expected to sign with said team in June, presumably after they cleared some cap space. If Olivea were a wide receiver I’d put my money on the Saskatchewan Rough Riders but he isn’t, which makes things much tougher.
Who could it be? Baltimore, Carolina, Denver, Detroit and Oakland all fit the bill as teams that might welcome some veteran competition for the right tackle spot but almost everyone could use some depth.

emphasis added. I'd take him over Green anyday.
I wish McQ would get the starting nod. After a tough start, he grew into the role.

I think this kills it for us. If we clear cap space, we'd better be signing Nnamdi to a long-term deal. I seriously doubt we could clear enough space to sign Nnamdi and bring in another relatively high priced guy.
Thanks - good article though!

Reason: You clear cap space, not kill it. Duh.

Even though Nnamdi has not signed, his salary counts against the cap still as far as I know due to him being Exclusive Franchised.

Definitely it does. I was trying to point out if we clear up some cap room (Jordan! Jordan!... and others), we should work a new long term deal for Nnamdi using the available space if/as necessary.
Now, it may work out that much of a long-term deal could be back loaded, so signing him to a long-term deal could count even less than his franchise tag against the cap. I guess... I'm no expert of course.
But my point is he has to be priority #1 at this point... then, and only then, should we look to further complicate our cap situation in the years to come by bringing on another high priced player.
My $0.02+tax.

Agreed Like I said in another thread sign Nnamdi, sign McFadden and the other draft picks and look for another stop gap DT like Grady and lets get ready to roll. We don't have money for expensive FA at this point.

That's interesting, thanks for the post.
Some teams have looked at him and passed, so I doubt he'll be expensive. Also, Oakland for what it's worth has been clearing out some cap space. Cant complain about O-line help. IMHO-Oakland should look for Odell Thurman to hit the waiver wire, and keep looking at Koren Robinson. I think of most of the moves we still can make, those two are the most important.
As for Nnamdi, I hope he signs long term, which will save us some $$ under the cap. This probably wont happen till July though.
Next two moves I WANT TO SEE HAPPEN (that shouldnt cost that much) 1)Pick up Odell Thurman off the waiver wire 2)Sign Koren Robinson. It's a little scary when half your WR corps are dealing with injuries, or have been.
Thurman & Robinson to Oakland. Next two moves I want to see.

Most definitely a big concern especially at the money Walker is making.
