Shanny Giving Sharpe The Shaft?
We've confirmed that the Broncos have signed free agent tight end Jed Weaver, who'll receive more than $1 million per year over three years after leaving the 49ers.
And this signing shouldn't prompt speculation as to whether the Broncos are planning for Shannon Sharpe's potential retirement. Most teams don't have the luxury of dumping $1 million of cap room into a backup tight end slot. Thus, the thinking in league circles is that, if Sharpe doesn't make the decision to retire, coach Mike Shanahan will make the decision for him.
Sharpe was vocal in his criticism of Mike Shanahan's decision to trade away running back Clinton Portis. Sharpe acknowledged in late February that the absence of Portis will be a factor in the veteran tight end's ultimate decision.
As we see it, the decision has already been made -- by the Broncos.
