The Patriots signed Bailey, a restricted free agent, to a reported $1.3-million offer sheet on Thursday. The Steelers have until next Thursday to match the offer for the 24-year-old or lose Bailey and get a sixth-round pick (the round in which Bailey was drafted in 2001) in return.

Bailey, the only player to visit the Patriots in the first days of free agency, is 6-foot-3, 300 pounds. He went to Ohio State. He'd be a likely replacement for Bobby Hamilton, who continues negotiating with the Oakland Raiders and seems destined to leave.
