PFT on Russell Negotiation

Don't shoot the messenger ... Pro Football Talk just ran this on their site:

POSTED 5:42 p.m. EDT; LAST UPDATED 6:36 p.m. EDT, July 29, 2007

RUSSELL DEAL COULD BE FOR FIVE YEARS

A league source tells us that the negotiation of a contract between the Raiders and No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell has been and will continue to be a difficult process, and that the Raiders might end up signing Russell a five-year deal.

Per the source, there are whispers of cash issues in Oakland that could prevent the team from funding a six-year package. Though we don't know whether that's a certainty, there's definitely some wisdom in scaling the contract back by a year, since no one knows at this point whether Russell will be a Peyton Manning or a Ryan Leaf. If it's the latter, the team has less money at risk.

Russell is represented by the firm of Metz, Lock, and Malinovic. They also represent receiver Dwayne Bowe. The No. 23 overall selection is a holdout in Kansas City. Said the source about the situation in Oakland, "It will be a long holdout unless the agents take a bad deal."

oh well thats the business. No big deal if Russell isnt there yet. He will sign eventually. The longer the Raiders hold out the more leverage they gain because Russell doesnt want to sit out the year.

PFT is right more often than wrong.. strong analysis site.

I've been saying it pre-draft and I'm likely not the first to say this lately, but the drafting of JR as the #1 will be looked at as a huge mistake in 5 years.. Not getting into camp on time is also big and his agent has a reputation for long holdouts.

JR just doesn't have the skills to miss significant first year camp. getting behind on the learning curve will virtually eliminate his chances of being effective this season and essentially put him a year behind.

I know this is speculation and I know there are a million arguments in the other direction as well, but I'm saying this for the record.. JR will be another highly rated, physically gifted QB from a powerhouse college program who doesnt have the intangebles to play as an elite NFL QB, and anything less than that will be a failure.

Meh. It is PFT. They are 50/50. Sometimes they steal rumors from reliable sites...

Just curious, what are you basing this opinion on? No one has seen him play a down yet at this level, and at this point no one knows how his intangibles will translate into making plays on the field. At this point we just don't know.

Just because he hasn't shown up 3 days into training camp doesn't mean he's a huge mistake or he has no skills.

No need to hate on him already. He's the guy that the organization chose after an extensive scouting and interviewing process, and we as fans can only hope that he will be successful as a Raider.

Anybody know if Al has had dealings or problems with these agents previously? They like to hold out players for a bigger/better contract, and Al can't stand that stuff if memory serves me right. Should be an interesting situation to follow and see who gives in first. I'm thinking it won't be Al.

They never "Steal" rumors. They always say if someone beat them to the story first. Like just a couple days ago some guy was signed and they thought they broke it first, but found out len pastabelly beat them so they gave him credit.

No they do not. I have seen them try to pass over rumors as being their own from time to time. But it is a moot p
