I agree with Sapp Leave the D alone prior to this season our defense was horrible IMO the defense got better this season because the players finally understood and executed the plays Ryan was calling on the sideline, take that away who knows what we will have next season. Players are paid to play the game personally I could care less what the players want the concept of "team" gets lost as soon as we start losing games its as if we attract these crybabies who refuse to play their heart out unless the organization listens to their opinion and appease their enormous ego's, what next fans choosing our coach. Truth is whoever the coach is next season there will be players on the team that will be unhappy unless ol Madden decides to come out retirement and bring us back to glory.

He also implied that he want to keep working with Rob as a DC, again, not betraying the guy complimenting him. Sapp sees that one thing and one thing only worked on his team last season, the D. Why mess with that to take a chance that RR MIGHT be a good HC. It is a gamble to do so, it is not a gamble if he is a DC.

The only way I want RR as our HC is if he is unhappy at DC. If he wants the HC position badly then he has earned it and deserves a shot. I haven't seen one quote that shows me this.
So he has to be unhappy to get a promotion? He cant like being a DC, but decide that he wants to be a HC? But you'll bank on Sark, who has not schemed or play called at the college or NFL level?

The O players voted on Moss. Its a meaningless title, the voting fell in line with a vet since there was no PB players and other important positions were either new/young players.

The 3-4 experiment was bad, but it showed something. By mid-year he admitted it was wrong and adjusted. Unfortunately, some of the players were young/inexperienced and the others were just not good. 2005 - used the 4-2-5 alot due to personnel. It kept us in games. Kept adjusting and it worked.

I like him but keep as the Defensive Coordinator. He does wonders with them and we dont want to mess that up. I still think Sarkisan as HC with Trestman or Martz as OC will wokr good. Or even Martz as HC.

I agree with Sapp, but I would like to see Rob at HC if he got the opportunity. But I would like him to stay D-coord for now and mentor one of our D assitants.

Players want Rob Ryan.............

Players say Rob is right man for job
Raiders defensive coordinator Ryan to interview for head coach
By Steve Corkran, MEDIANEWS STAFF

Article Last Updated:01/11/2007 03:14:38 AM PST

Quote:
Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has been told that he will receive an interview for the Raiders coaching vacancy. That hasn't happened yet, but many players are making known their support of Ryan.
Ryan has spent the past three seasons as the Raiders defensive coordinator. During that time, he has established a strong rapport with the players he coaches and gained the admiration of others on the roster.

Hence the reason players on defense and offense are supporting Ryan's candidacy, even if it remains in its infancy.

On Wednesday, running back Zack Crockett and defensive tackle Warren Sapp weighed in.

"It would be great if they hire Rob," Crockett said by phone. "It definitely would be a great move. But (Raiders managing general partner Al Davis) is going to be the one to make the decision, not us players."

Davis, by all accounts, asked for and received input from numerous players about their feelings toward Art Shell, whom Davis fired as coach Jan. 4, four days after the Raiders concluded a 2-14 season.

Davis has spent the past week identifying and interviewing candidates to succeed Shell and offensive coordinators Tom Walsh and John Shoop.

Sapp said he thinks the world of Ryan but isn't sure it's such a good thing to mess with a defense that flourished under Ryan last season.

"I've got me a defensive coordinator," Sapp said. "That's not the problem. It's who's calling the (offensive) plays, and who's implementing what we're going to do each week, and what we're trying to accomplish (offensively)."The Raiders scored a league-low 168 points last season, with Walsh calling the plays the first 11 games and Shoop taking over for the final five games. Oakland's defense scored 30 of those points and finished as the third-ranked unit in the league in terms of average yards allowed per game.

Such is the reason, Sapp said, the Raiders would be better off hiring an offensive-minded coach. Davis interviewed USC assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian on Monday and former Raiders offensive coordinator Marc Trestman on Tuesday.

Sarkisian did not return a phone call Wednesday. Trestman left the Bay Area on Tuesday night after interviewing for the offensive coordinator position.

Regardless who gets the coaching job, Sapp said, the new coach is facing a major undertaking in rebuilding an offense that scored only 12 touchdowns, allowed a league-worst 72 sacks and failed to establish an identity.

"I learned a long time ago that there's no one coach or scheme that's going to make you better," Sapp said. "One guy ain't going to come in here, put his finger on it and do something magical.

"It's all the people around (the coach) who's doing the rowing. We won't get this thing fixed right away or else everyone would be doing it across the league."

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz has been mentioned as a potential candidate to succeed Shell. However, the Raiders have not yet contacted Martz about an interview, according to Martz's agent, Bob LaMonte. Martz interviewed with the Raiders last year before Davis settled upon Shell.

Davis said last year that he shied away from Martz because of Martz's health problems at the end of his tenure as the St. Louis Rams coach in 2005, when he took medical leave after five games. Yet, Davis has expressed admiration for Martz's talent.

"(Five) years ago, I didn't think there was anyone who had produced in professional football what Martz produced with the St. Louis Rams throwing the football," Davis said last year. "There was no question about it. It was brilliant."

This article is misleading. One player has voted his support (Crockett) and one has not (Sapp). To say that the players want Ryan seems like a misleading headline..

Yeah, pretty much - players wanted Bugel. 'Nuff said.

Also...SAPP DOESN'T WANT RYAN AS A HEAD COACH! Read what he actually said. He likes Ryan, respecits Ryan, but also realizes that he's probably best at where he's at - defensive coordinator - and pushing him into a head coach position might just ruin both the team and the defense, much like having Norv as a HC instead of an OC.
