The NFL will name Phillip Buchanon of The Oakland Raiders AFC Defensive Player of the Week tomorrow.
Buchanon, one of two Raiders first round picks in 2002, registered two interceptions, five tackles and a forced fumble in a 28-18 victory against the Minnesota Vikings, who entered the game with a 6-3 record and first-place standing in the NFC North. On the second play from scrimmage, the Oakland cornerback intercepted a Minnesota pass and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown, putting the Raiders ahead 7-0 only 49 seconds into the game. Buchanon clutched his second interception with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter inside the Raiders' end zone to end a 10-play Minnesota drive and preserve a 21-3 advantage.
Buchanon had a hand in three of the Vikings' six turnovers and helped the Silver and Black to victory. Sunday's win over the Vikings marked the second-consecutive week that the 5-10, second-year Oakland cornerback found the end zone as he posted a 78-yard punt return on November 9 against the Jets. Buchanon has scored an astounding five touchdowns in 16 career games played (three interception returns, two punt returns).
"Phillip started the game with the spark we needed," said Raiders head coach BILL CALLAHAN. This is the former University of Miami stars second Player of the Week Award.
