Depth would be good !
If Williams makes it out of camp uninjured we could have depth. I feel he doesn't make the final cut thought.

Depth at the LB spot would be something that we really need as well as something that we have been asking for all offseason. I am excited to watch Howard and Williams compete for the final spot and whoever loses, I hope they are able to impact the defense on a situatioinal basis. Good Find!

I think Williams will remain with Morrison, Clark and Howard, Bing and Ekejuba. Outside chance that R.Thomas is retained (mainly because of Williams' history of injuries). 6-7 LBs is the norm.

Howard may be the best option but I wanna see the kid earn the starting spot. If he performs well in camp, preseason, and carries over into the regular season, I believe he will push for the starting role.
As mentioned above, when is the last time we had quality depth at LB. In recent years we've been extremely thin at this spot and it's come back to bite us a few times.

Howard does possess a rare combination of speed and size. The Raiders needed a true outside LB...something they haven't had in a long time. Howard's acquisition will go a long way to shoring up the third down and long problem. It seemed that teams had a better chance converting third and long than third and short. It was completely frustrating...as soon as you thought the defense was coming of the field...not. Howard has the speed and skills to be effective in coverage...plus his quickness will give Ryan options in blitz packages that he did not have last year. I look forward to both Howard and Huff having an impact on the Raider D in 2006. Bing is an intriguing pick but will probably be utilized most on special teams where he should excel.
An after thought....the acquisition of Huff and Howard...given their tremendous speed....should also shore up the outside running game. Runners will have a difficult time trying to outrun these two in order to turn the corner. I see our tackles for a loss going up. |

Let's hope he's not the 2nd coming of Travian Smith!!!
I was very high on Travians speed from the outside too...

Smith never possessed the speed that Howard possesses. Howard is a freak. He is taller, heavier than Bing and much faster. Howard possesses good safety speed...let alone good speed for a linebacker. Plus Smith never produced in college like Howard did...and I think Howard's best days are ahead of him. Plus Smith was not athletic...too upright...to stiff in the hips...Howard possesses extremely fluid hips...that is why he is considered a great asset in coverage. Smith never possessed such skills...never was considered a good defender in coverage. Smith had good straight line running speed (not great)...and Smith could destroy a running back...especially if it were a head on collision...but Smith was not agile...too stiff...running backs with good moves left him standing in his boots. No the two are completely different types of players...no comparison whatsoever. Don't worry he will never be another Smith.
