That's not true. Up to this point, Walter had never played outside of the preseason, and Al was really excited to get him in the 3rd round when he felt Walter was 1st round quality.

"Knowing what we know now, should you have told us to pick Leinart over Huff?" Davis asked Shell, according to Danny More, Shell's longtime agent.

"You set this franchise back 10 years. Now I have to fix it."

Given the source, the quote rings true to me.
My first question would be is this guy representing Quinn or Russel? LOL!

True but we'll see Saturday if he has truly lost any faith in him.

I dunno hit, i guess i'm naive enough to think Davis was truly sorry for releasing Shell the first time and the second time around he said, "get to it".

I really do think Shell had full control the beginning of the season. When it went kaput, Davis stepped in and made the changes.

I suspect the truth lies somewhere in between. It's pretty much indisputable that Al has final say over all things Oakland Raider, including first-round draft picks. When all was said and done, Huff was Davis' pick, not Shell's.

That said, Leinart was an Al Davis wet dream. A big lefty with star power out of Al's favorite school and a Heisman winner to boot. I can't imagine Davis passed on that easily, nor without at least some input against the pick from the coaching staff. Certainly Al gave Shell leeway elsewhere, i.e. the hirings of Tom Walsh, Jackie Slater, Ted Dashier.

Still, Al needs to stop blaming others for decisions made within the franchise and get himself one of these:

It was Als choice to pass on Lienhart, he probably did value Coach Shells opinion on the draft, as a few players like Boothe or McQuinstan have the ear mark of a Art Shell type player, but also a Al Davis gem in the rough project feel to them. Al is the Raiders and is the guy makeing the calls. He has said plunty of times how he liked Lienhart, how he liked Marino, how he liked Elway.. but to contradict that he has said that he wont repeat past mistakes like Marinovich and Wilson as well. Al makes his picks and its unfortunate that the needs vs what was available was so rough. But if we didnt take Huff last year everyone would be complaining about how we didnt get a replacement for Derick Gibson and how bad our D was as well as complaining about how bad our O was and how Lienhart is the next Robert Gallery bust, because face it no QB would have been sucessful here last year.

I think Davis knew his experiment was failing at the end of September last year, but let it play itself out, he may have felt as though he pulled the trigger to early on Shell his first time around, but Shell created both situations that led to his termination...

Savior? No.
Excellent young quarterback? Yes.

In his last six starts, Leinart completed 115 of 186 passes (62 percent) for 1,432 yards (239 per game) with 6 TDs and 5 INTs. The Cardinals went 4-2 in those games. Those are damn good numbers for a rookie quarterback.

On top of that, had the Raiders done the right thing and drafted Leinart last year, they might be choosing between Peterson and Johnson right now instead of scrambling to solve a woeful quarterback situation.

lately it seems the Raiders are one step behind... very valid points and certainly worth some rep.
