Why you putting so much stock into a freaking 40 yard dash? The 40 yard dash is not a good way to judge a player.

It's only part of how a player is judged. If he would have ran a 4.89 like Mo Clarrett a couple of years ago he wouldn't be the first back off the board.

You can judge a player as to what he does on the field.

Its not a good way to judge a player. It is a good way to judge a player's attributes. Speed is a strength in the NFL. Its a commodity that many teams pay heavily for. It (40s) allows a player to demonstrate his strengths to potential suitors. So yeah, alot of stock is put into 40 times. Is it a telling factor of how good a player is or will be.... no by any means. But it does give another area to be evaluated thus giving scouts a broader view of a player's skills.

200 LB RBs that run over a 4.5 don't hit holes very fast and lack quickness as well as speed typically. However, I do think Lynch is more of a 4.45 to 4.48 guy, but definately not under 4.4 guy like some people were claiming....that's all I want to point out. Just because he went to Cal doesn't mean he's able to run a 4.2

The 40 yard dash is a good way to judge a players attributes? What were the 40 times of Jerry Rice and Tim Brown as compared to slugs like Alvis Whitted and James Jett. The 40 times is not a good attribute; the tape of this guys is the only things that is worthy of judging these guys.

It is not just about 40 time and it is not just about college stats either. Everything is weighed in. However, you don't find too many HOF type RBs that can't bust a 4.4

Yeah but how can you distinguish whether a player is fast or quick. If he has elusiveness or just good foot speed. There is track speed. Football speed.
Quickness. Elusiveness. Coordination. There are individual drills set-up to measure a player's abilitites in these areas. 40 being one of them. Short Shuttle. 3 Cone drill etc. etc.

Production on the field is not the only way to judge a player. A good example would be Peter Warrick out of FSU. Very productive player in college. Slow 40 time with a 4.6 forty, yet his quickness and coordination allowed him to perform on the collegiate level. Well when he got to the NFL his quickness offered him less of an advantage because of the fact that the overall quickness level of the NFL is superior to the NCAA. He did not have the deep speed needed to create separation from coverage. Thus his career never fullfilled the promise of his collegiate one.
