The key here IMO is does the Coach COMMUNICATE with his players... or at least somone on the coaching staff COACH during the game.
Dungy Belichik, Parecells all talk to their players DURING the game... just a word... a comment... doesn't have to be fiery... but they DO have to communicate. Shell never did that. You NEVER saw him talking to players during the game... NEVER!!! And apparently he never talked to them off the feild either (at least by reading some comments from players, Moss, Porter, Walter, Simms...)... COMMUNICATION is the key to coaching IMO. |

Shell got into a heated argument with Hostetler in Miami in his first tenure. Shell is seething, but on this latest run, because of health conditions, he could not run the gamut with his players....with that in mind, you have to know he took the job as a favor to Al.....you sacrifice your health to get back on the sidelines? When you know a coach is not going to ream you for a mistake, you're going to make mistakes over and over again. I'm sure players knew Shell had to control himself because of health.
As for Kiffin? Who knows? Honestly I don't care....has Belichek openly yelled at his players, what about Walsh, Holmgren? It's how wisely you use those few minutes to correct the players mistakes that will tell how good of a coach you are....because once it's past, it's forgotten. |
