With Bartell it is not so much about evaluating talent as it is just looking at the results of his 7-8 year playing career. The data was there to tell you this guy was pretty good for a time in this league. What was there really to evaluate on the question of talent? Like others have said, not every decision is going to be made on the basis of talent. Experience and finances sometimes factor in. As the fiscal house gets in order, finances will factor in less in less hopefully.

A lot of the players RM signed were stop gap guys who had potential. Signed to bargain based contracts due to players either having an off year the past year, having a past injury, or having untapped potential (high draft picks like pat lee). Not all of them were ever going to be massive hits. You hope that they play at a level that will get you (the team) by for a year but you simply can't expect that they all will. The cap put us in a tricky position last year. We were restricted to looking at bottom of the barrel guys to fill some quite important positions on this team. At the time, a lot of the free agency moves and draft choices made a lot of sense. Did they all work out? No. Have some worked out? Of course. Bartell, Spencer, Lee etc haven't worked out. I'd say that we found some nice receivers in Criner and Streater, Burris and Wheeler were good pick ups. Seymour's contract restructuring saves plenty of space next year when we can cut him with no dead money attached etc. With more cap space this year, we might be able to acquire a few players who aren't at the bottom of the barrel and can actually be relied on to contribute for this team consistently.

Looking forward to this draft though. Reggie's personnel department has only been in place since post 2012 draft. This will be the first draft with all of his scouts and personnel men in place.

No one wants to fire Mchenzie but why not just start Chekwa from the beginning.

    sigh...

    again?

Reggie has late round picks and cap hell. Bartell brings into question about his talent evaluating? lol such a joke. It's called no cap room, and needed a starting caliber CB. Bartell was solid before injury and spencer started too. He tried to fill in the holes with the best cheap CB's available. He couldn't afford to spend a lot of money at that position this year.

How about Streater? Wheeler? Burris ?? (late round pick and prob gets 100 tackles)

And how about waiting to see how his draft picks turn out? yes 1 season under his belt.. 1 Season! most rookies don't make impacts right away especially the late rounders. Criner will be a stud just watch!

McKenzie is doing fine, it's not like Bartell was going to be here next year (of course all the arm chair GM's will crucify him for signing bargain priced veterans with a limited cap space)

What does everyone think about him Signing Brisiel? Spencer?

His draft picks now that they have almost a whole season under their belt?

Is he the talent evaluator Wolf made him out to be?

The season's over ... Bartell was a bet that might have helped get us to the playoffs ... we lost the bet ... cut our losses and try to see if an underprivileged player can step up and help us win next season.

Its concerning, but its only one season. Bartell, Pat Lee, Goodson? The list goes on with pathetic signings.

The thing I worry about is that McKenzie figured it was necessary to get rid of one of the top head scouts to bring in HIS guy.

The whole thing about bringing in your OWN guys gets ridiculous sometimes.

Not to mention, Allen hasn't exactly looked like he is ready yet to be a coach either.

Thanks to Blackhole John for the sig!!

Reggie can get a look at all the other CBs that are long shots just like Chekwa, and Chekwa is eligible for the practice squad. Out of all the young guys, maybe Adams sticks, now they get a look at Chekwa, who is on the PS. Sometimes it is better to let them develop, because if they come in and play too much they can not be PS players and then they get cut, and then out of the league often times. The PS prolongs their time to develop, and nobody has signed him to an active roster, so he is PS material at the moment. He will only play 3 games, so he should still have PS eligibility next year maybe? I'm not sure.

    Edit: Ahhh

Straight from the collective bargaining agreement:
"The Practice Squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad:
    "players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience;
"free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during their only Accrued Season(s).

"An otherwise eligible player may be a Practice Squad player for a third season only if the Club by which he is employed that season has at least 53 players on its Active/Inactive List during the entire period of his employment.

"A player shall be deemed to have served on a Practice Squad in a season if he has passed the club's physical and been a member of the club's Practice Squad for at least three regular season or postseason games during his first two Practice Squad seasons, and for at least one regular season or postseason game during his third Practice Squad season.

"(For purposes of this Section, a bye week counts as a game provided that the player is not terminated until after the regular season or postseason weekend in question.)"

Bartell was signed to a 1-year contract, namely as a stop gap player. Releasing Bartell will not affect the Raiders cap situation. If he had signed Bartell to a multi-year deal and he didn't pan out, I would understand people being upset (due to the impending cap hit). But, this is not the case.

Additionally, this recognition of a mistake is a good thing. For how many years were players on the Al Davis Scholarship that literally would not have been on any other team in the league? McKenzie's ability to be frank with himself and not hold onto players because he has a sensitivie ego is welcome. The only way to approve is through recognizing and addressing mistakes – in all phases of life.

    Brisiel
    Spencer

    Right
    Routt
    Wimbley
    Burris
    Wheeler
    Streater
We can add a few more right moves:

    - Getting a 7th-rounder for Louis Murphy
    - Getting Mike Goodson for Bruce Campbell
    - Marquette King
    - Juron Criner
    - Philip Adams
    - Jeremy Stewart
    - Dumping Kevin Boss

I still have a hard time with the Brisiel signing. It was a great price for a very good guard with toughness (played with broken leg), hopefully if he stays (I think he will) he can turn this around and be what he needs to be, what he was.

As far as free agent signings Reggie had no money to spend, so he was picking from the bottom of the barrell.
doesn't have much to do with his talent evaluation really. Before the hire it was said that he is good at evaluating college players coming out.

Brisel was a bad signing, only reason he was brought in was because he was supposed to be a good ZBS lineman...Thankyou again Greg Knapp, the gift that keeps on giving
    Great post, Rain!!!
"The Media hated Davis because he kept his mouth shut when it counted and didn't bend over to their tactics. Most NFL owners hated Davis because he was a 'them', having worked his way up, and also because he had no problem hiring minorities when no one else would. You can only have so many people saying bad things about you before the sheep believe it...And now, the sheep don't even know why they hate the Raiders, it's just always been that way..." - Sir Pig
