Nice positive thread, definitely like how we're committing less penalties, still worried about a few things but like you said, only the 2nd preseason game and really no offense besides the Saints has looked deadly so far.
So far through two preseason games we've committed 9 penalties for 64 yards (Cowboys 5-37 yards, Cardinals 4-27 yards).
To put this in perspective: last season we set the record with 163 penalties for 1,358 yards. That averages out at over 10 penalties for about 85 yards per game.
Despite giving away countless downs, 85 hard earned yards and energy expended not being able to get the defense off the field; we went 8-8 a only just missed out on the playoffs (without McFadden for half the season).
SO FAR Coach Allen has been able to do what so many before him were not. It's still early days but to me this has been the most significant story line of our preseason so far.
Palmer over throws a few balls and people lose their sh*t. IT'S PRESEASON! I want to see him take those shots now! It's PRESEASON; glorified practice!!!! I wanted to see 1. A healthy explosive McFadden 2. Multiple Blitz/coverage scheme bases 3. NO PENALTIES. So far I've seen significantly more positives than negatives.
Trust these coaches, trust this talent, trust McKenzie. We ARE headed in the right direction.![]()

In comparison to this time last year, we had 16 penalties for 139 yards after two games. However, im not sure how different it would be with the regular Refs. Im not talking conspiracy, but maybe its some missed calls that might have been called if it was the regular crew. Cant wait for the season to start tho.
That's a pace for 72 penalties for the whole year. In the past I would expect that number before Columbus Day.
Ok now go knock on wood. The lack of penalties is one of the things I am most impressed with and excited about so far but I didnt want to bring it up. I dont want the league, refs, or replacement refs to notice so that maybe it can continue through the regular season. Dont jinx us man![]()
I agree great post .
I have seen so far what I wanted to out of the group in these two games so far and hoping that it carries over for the final two games .
1.) Penalties have been less then before . But like was mentioned is this because of the replacement Refs missing some calls ? That may have been called on us by the Official NFL Refs .
2.) Consistent play from the DL in back to back games
3.) Darren look to be explosive coming off of his injury and he has .
4.) Pryor is getting some experience under him which he did and should get plenty of snaps in the preseason finally before he is put on the shelf for the season . Got a lot of room to grow before he is ready to
take and compete for Matty job .
5.) Still waiting to see which TE steps up to be the starter for us
Every time I see that yellow flag I hold my breath. The amount of penalties we have committed has been nothing short of miraculous. I don't think it has much to do with the refs missing calls. Both teams we have played have committed quite a few penalties during the games.
Now they just need to keep up the good work.
It's definitely encouraging but we won't really know how much more disciplined they are until the regular officials come back as we all know the regulars practice their flag tossing muscles prior to officiating Raiders games. Honestly I would love to see the league rotate officials in and out every year to circulate new blood. It's human nature for these long time officials to develop biases against some teams and players. The Raiders have been guilty of lack of discipline but it seems like the officials expect it and call anything close because they are the Raiders. There's a reason that Belichik and Brees have been outspoken and that's because they are in the regular official's good books and want to keep the playing field slanted.
Replacement refs. They don't have a grudge for the Raiders. Once the regular refs come back well see the the ticky tack phantom calls come back
I find it incredible people are so quick to respond with pessimism and attribute this to the new refs, and not our improvement...
One question: If indeed it is the new refs (and their supposed lack of bias against us or just general inexperience), why have the two team we've faced so far amassed over double the penalties we have in these games (DALLAS: 12- 91Yards... AZ: 10- 103yards)???
Not saying we're the finished article and that we should expect the penalty problems to be a thing of the past, just yet... but I think credit should be given where due and these stats should be greeted with optimism!
team does look a lot more disciplined, especially on D.
Really?
I call it 40 years of brainwashing to the way I feel about the refs and the penalties.
Now I will be just a happy skippy when the other sucky refs (make no mistake these yahoo's are nothing special either) come back and we are still 5 and under penalties a game.
Then it will be down to one of two factors: 1. Coaching. 2. Al's passing.
