Raiders Receiver Pleads Guilty To Bay Bridge DUI: News: SFAppeal

Raiders Receiver Pleads Guilty To Bay Bridge DUI
    Dan McMenamin, Bay City News

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey pleaded no contest today to a misdemeanor DUI charge in connection with his arrest on the Bay Bridge in April.

Heyward-Bey, 25, was pulled over at about 2 a.m. on April 7 on the lower deck of the bridge on his way back to the East Bay from a nightclub in San Francisco, his attorney Ivan Golde said.

He agreed to plead no contest in San Francisco Superior Court to the misdemeanor charge this morning in exchange for a sentence of three years' probation, three months of DUI classes and various fines and fees.

Heyward-Bey had been pulled over after allegedly weaving and driving slightly above the speed limit in his 2012 Range Rover, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Prosecutors said a chemical test conducted at the scene found his blood-alcohol content was .13 percent, and a Breathalyzer test taken about an hour later found his BAC was still .12.

Golde had previously said there were "serious issues" with the case, but told Judge Samuel Feng today that seeking a trial on the charges would distract from with the Raiders' upcoming season and "would be an undue hardship" on his client.

Heyward-Bey "wants to put this behind him," Golde said.

Raiders players are scheduled to start reporting for the team's preseason training camp this Sunday in Napa.

Heyward-Bey was Oakland's top receiver last season, leading the Raiders with 64 receptions and 965 receiving yards, both career highs.

John Madden:They've got a ways to go. He was playing the game without a full deck. To be honest, they don’t have enough players. The cupboard was pretty bare. It would have been tough to do much more than what they did. If he’s going to do well, they gotta get a lot more … some teams need a quarterback or a running back, or a pass rusher … . The Raiders need a whole barrel of guys!

I wonder if he'll get any type of punishment from goodal , like missing games, or fines. Im not sure of the rules for the different types of offences or for 1st time offenders.

I don't think first time dui offenders are suspended, unless they were already in the substance abuse program. Tommy Kelly didn't get suspended when he got his a few years back...guess we will find out....

He'll be suspended for sure. I suspect the NFL is going to get a lot tougher on DUI's since Kenny Britt (Titans), Donald Washington (Chiefs), and Marshawn Lynch all got busted within the last 5 days. It's not just those cases but the large amount of DUI arrests are going to force the NFL's hand.

Here's an image of all the NFL Off season arrests so far:

Huh. Somebody predicted a plea to lesser charges.

For his first offense? If he gets a single game I'll be surprised.

Be good and learn from this lesson, DHB.

To put it all into perspective - if I got caught DUI off-the-clock, my company couldn't suspend me - not for that at least.

I think the Commadant dishes out something simply because he can.

He shouldn't get suspended. This doesn't fall under the personal conduct policy it falls under substance abuse. This is his first time getting a DUI so he should be ready to go against the Chargers week 1. Now if he gets caught drinking and driving again that's a whole different story, I think DHB is smarter than that and hopefully learns from this.

I agree with those who say he won't be suspended .... I also think raiders knew/know played out the Murphy trade.

Damn i didn't see this coming. Surprisingly we're at the bottom of our division in arrests, for the last couple of years.

Yep I was wrong. First time offenders usually don't get suspended but forfeit two game checks.

    My bad.

Why the heck would his punishment be so harsh?

Three years probation? Probably unsupervised, but d@mn! Three MONTHS of classes? Am I missing something here?
