    A little cap relief

Tyvon Branch's new four-year contract has a salary cap number of $2.4 million for the 2012 season, according to a league source, giving the Raiders a total of $5.159 million in cap space 10 days before players begin reporting to Napa for training camp.

Exactly how much cap space does Branch deal afford Raiders?

If this is true , we'r gonna be taking a major cap hit in 2013, it just doesnt sound like reggie is sticking to his plan of not back loading contracts. Im not an expert on capology but with all the other cap hits coming in 2013 like Carson Palmer, Dmc and Tomy kelly's increased wages, we could be facing some tough decisions on who to keep and who to get rid of.

I believe I read somewhere, and I could be mistaken, but I believe that I read that any left over cap space this year would carry over in to next... or something to that effect.

Yeah but even if thats true, why would they go out of thier way to load up his contract for next year, if not to clear money for this year and why would they( they being RM) do this if they werent planning on using the extra cap space to sign other players like Benson or whoever.

We're taking cap hits now from Routt/Wimbley releasings, so we'll have a lot more $$ next year with them off the books.

Well it gives you the freedom to sign someone or negotiate with another piece that you want and if it doesnt work out it doesn't kill you next year... that make sense?

This is true but from some of the #s posted in another thread, Palmers salery alone will about soak all that up in 2013, not to mention tons of other key players contracts being up like Dmc , Tommy kelly etc etc.You also have to figure in all these stop gap one year cntract guys like bartel, spencer and so on, if they dont stay we have to find a replacement, or if they do pan out and stay, they will usualy requier a pay raise and an extended contract.

I'm no Capoligist either, but I do know that it is going to take more than one year to get out of all the contracts we've accumulated. Whether or not Branch's deal is back loaded or not we still need to retain the players that are hard working and will contribute to the success of the team in the future.

Yeah that makes pretty good sense , if you look at it from that perspective.

It would be interesting to see the contract details. If this report is true, I would guess that it means his signing bonus is about 1.75 mil a year for 4 years, so 7 mil. Other reports said he got 17 mil guaranteed. These numbers might actually be good cap news, they might mean the final year of the contract is at some very big $$$ like 10 mil or something and that he is relatively cheap the first two years, bigger money in the 3rd, then a 4th year he won't see unless he is a pro bowler.

If this is the case, Reggie is one smart dude.

I agree , Im just worried that we might be forced to let some key players go that we may need. Im not that worried though, Im hoping and pretty confident that RM has a plan and it will all work out in the wash.

    A little cap relief

I know John Clayton said we will have some cap room next year. We also have a few FAs to decide on as well as what to do with Seymour and possibly Kelly.

i truly dont think people should be worrying about next year...first and foremost no one has access to the info about how our cap situation will look going into next season..second we dont know how contracts on the team are setup as far as who we can cut next year without penalties etc..we will not be signing any high priced FAs or even overpaying for homegrown players..ill be worried about the cap when reggie syas hes worried about it

Branch is due $10 million next year. Kelly is ripe for a restructure or release at 9 million. Lechler is making almost 6 million this year look for that number to cut in half next year if not more. Wimbley and Routt money will be off the books and will save up upwards of 12 Million. DMAC needs to play at least 10-12 games this year minimum or I just don't see RM resigning him. I think most of his bonus is off the books so we pay him the 6.7 million or send him on the way and take a 5.5 savings.
