    Anybody recall...

...the time Drew Brees was a free agent?

Was it possible that we could've acquired him?

Of all the veteran QB's Mr. Davis went after, why couldn't he go after Brees?

Seeing as there's not much news going on in Raider land I thought this would make a good thread.

Brees was franchised and hurt when he went to NO. He was a gamble that worked out for them.

Of course, we could have drafted him originally, but he did not have much of an arm.

That and we were a terrible team at that time who had a lot of trouble attracting any real free agents who were looking for anything more than a gigantic pay check.

I see, was that about the time we got Aaron Brooks?

Do you think we could've done some damage with Brees?

With our luck he probably would've torn his other shoulder muscle with the atrocious O-line play we had.

I don't know the numbers but Brees would have been really expensive and, as I said, was injured. Maybe Katrina was Karmic payback for Brees. Water under the bridge, I think. I don't like Al or his legacy, but this is one he did not strike out on.

It would have been a different scenario for him and I do not think he would have flourished. Sean Payton and him just seem to have that IT factor together.

Simply put, Brees does not fit the mold of a "stretch-the-field" type.

Brees has in fact made a living and set an NFL record primarily in the Run & Shoot. While many teams now employ the R&S as part of their total offensive package, some teams are using it more than not: Patrioits and Packers, along with the Saints off the top of my head. Peyton often employs it.

Similar to the WC in terms of strategy - the pass to open up the run - the differences would be the personnel on the field, otherwise, the R&S operates primarily from the shot-gun, a single-back, and 4 active receivers (5 including the RB) on any given play.

It has been successful for those teams built like that - sure handed receivers that can RAC, RBs that can block first, catch second, then run like an NFL'er, and finally, an accurate QB.

Don't look now, but we're nearly built like that.

I was reading a thread after the season ended this past year on black reign (another raider forum site) and this guy said he met andrew at a college football game or something like that (cant remember).

Anyways he was talking to him and said he didnt adjust well to the NFL because it was way different then college ball to him. Also said he didnt hate the raiders and always felt like they had talent but coaching and ownership held the team back.

Because Al was a simpleton about talent, screwed up his Oakland deal, screwed up his LA deal, and spent more money screwing municipalities than he did paying head coaches.

Besides the fact that he had absolutely no OL protection? I don't think he sucked, I don't think he ever had a chance.
