Honestly, I'd think we'd do better to pick up a defensive guy than another receiver. Sounds like a guy that's fast and strong.
RT @caplannfl For the ones who asked earlier, the #Raiders were at Josh Gordon's workout today, source confirmed.
The Cleveland Browns were hardly the only team that showed up to watch former Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon work out on Tuesday in anticipation of Thursday's NFL Supplemental Draft.
Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports that 21 teams showed up and saw Gordon run a 4.52-second 40-yard dash. While that isn't quite as fast as some pre-draft buzz indicated, it's plenty quick for a 6-foot-3, 224-pound athlete.
Caplan also reported that Gordon had a 36-inch vertical leap and 10-foot-1 broad jump, which are very good numbers.
In the traditional draft process, the Pro Day is not the end-all, be all. It's a little more important for Gordon considering that teams haven't seen him play in 2010. This 40-yard time doesn't figure to increase the early round hype surrounding Gordon, but we doubt that it will hurt his buzz.
At this point, conventional wisdom has Gordon going in the third round.
UPDATE: Caplan later reported that Gordon pulled his left quadriceps during his workout.

Josh Gordon pulled his left quadriceps, but was able to finish all routes etc during workout. Didn't drop a pass.

UPDATE II: Gordon spoke to reporters after the workout, and he acknowledged that he is not taking the most idealized path to the pros.
"The supplemental draft isn't the way you want to go into the NFL when you're growing up, but considering my circumstances, I've got to attack it with a full head of steam and do the best I can," he said, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Gordon went on to explain his departure from Baylor, which resulted from a failed marijuana test.
"Everything I thought I had, everything in front of me, just went down the drain. I didn't want to stop chasing my dream, so I transferred, sat out the season and worked as hard as I could to start from scratch."
Lumpkin's agent, Chris Martin, said that 19 teams have inquired about Lumpkin and will likely attend his workout:
The Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints, Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals, Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Houston Texans.
The NFL headlines today are dominated by the workout of former Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon, but under the din of speculation about who will select and in which round, an unheralded prospect from the group of eight eligible players is garnering more interest than anyone expected last week.
Former Carson-Newman linebacker Larry Lumpkin will join Gordon, former TCU running back Ed Wesley, and former Boise State defensive back Quaylon Ewing-Burton to become the fourth prospect to hold a pro day before the NFL Supplemental Draft on Thursday. Aaron Wilson of scout.com reports that the workout will take place at Lumpkin's old school, Alma Bryant High School in Irvington, Alabama.
Wilson also reports some measureables that might make Lumpkin worth a surprise pick on Thursday if he can reproduce them on Wednesday. According to Wilson, Lumpkin has run a 4.57 40, benched 225 pounds 30 times and posted a 36" vertical, all at 6'0", 240 pounds.
To put that in perspective, Lumpkin's reported 40 time would have been the third-best among linebackers at the combine, behind only Mychal Kendricks and Zach Brown, both of whom went in the second round. It's also better than No. 9 overall pick Luke Kuechly.
Thirty bench press reps would have been tied for fourth-best among linebackers at the combine. A 36-inch vertical would have put Lumpkin among the top 10 linebackers at the combine. Just those three measureables would have made Lumpkin one of the more impressive physical specimens at linebacker among the combine participants.
That amount of interest indicates that Lumpkin has a chance to get drafted, even though no one has projected him as a draftable project in the last week. Wilson does state that Lumpkin is projected as a late-round pick or priority free agent, but he had generated almost zero buzz until Wilson's report. If his workout comes anywhere near Wilson's reported number, Lumpkin should steal the supplemental draft headlines from Gordon tomorrow.

Practice?

i agree...the only reason i could see reggie using a pick on one of these guys is because he wants more competition in the LB group...i dont think reggie would use above a 6th or 7th to grab this guy..either way id still rather try to pickup a vet LB if we can get our cap fixed in time to sign someone for camp..
Unfortunately we are only loaded with "potential" at the WR position and have yet to be able to put 2 consistent receivers on the field at the same time. We have bigger needs but keep in mind that part of what makes Aaron Rogers great is that depth at WR and at least 4 guys who are consistent, legitimate threats.
Yet and still these WR (or any of these guys) are not sure things either. Add to the fact all the players are in this draft because the have issues. I think we need to look at our own guys. If they can stay healthy I think we have 3 solid WR and 3 up and comers. Although the Raiders are reported to have scouts at these Pro Days that is what real Front Offices do they Scout. Not to be confused with the Raider method of the last 25 years (aside from a couple in the early 21st Century). I am willing to bet we will not pursue any of these guys.

it seems like 15 -20 years ago most receivers were no more than 6,1 & 200 and at least had 4.4 speed, they've gotten bigger but it seems slower as well.
It seems like that but its not true, you're just thinking the raiders wrs lol. Rice didnt run a good 40.. most nfl wrs are around the 4.5 time on average. Faster times are 4.3 and low 4.4Originally Posted by Naphtali:3716999
Not sure I agree... do we really need more LBs or better ones?
We're entering the part of the year where we'll be cutting down the roster significantly. We're not looking for camp fodder here. Anybody we bring on at this point (e.g. Benson?) had better well have a high likelihood of outperforming not only the scrubs currently on the summer team, but really the 53 projected for September 10.
Today, our LBs are Curry, Goethel, Ihenacho, Kurn, McClain, Stupar, Wheeler. In 2011 we carried five linebackers. If this continues, two of these guys will be gone. So for Lumpkin to make the team, he'd have to beat out three of these guys. McClain, Wheeler, Curry and Goethel seem to be locks IMHO. Could Lumpkin beat out Ihenacho, Stupar AND Kurn having missed the OTAs? Hmmmm...
Now, you can argue bring him on board and have him go to the PS... but two of the three aforementioned LBs will be vying for that action as well. Do you really want to give up a pick in 2013 for somebody who in all likelihood - at best - would end up on the PS? That doesn't seem like a good use of a pick to me.
