And to his credit (again, not saying this rumor was necessarily true but speculating), whatever it was, Mr Davis did not air the dirty laundry.

Without us knowing, I lean on the side of giving Mr Davis benefit of the doubt that there may have been good reason for the rift and the silence surrounding it.

never heard that before. i always thought it was just cuz marcus didnt like playing second fiddle to BO that led to things getting really out of hand. I just look at it this way, regardless of the reason it boils down to Al davis had a good side and a bad side - if you wanted anything to do with the organization in those days you stayed on Al's good side.

Just as I'd love the SF Giants to bring Barry Bonds around to help hitters, I'd love the Raiders to bring Gannon around to help QBs.

A lot of these old pros could have a lot to offer the younger generation. Hell I'm surprised Jerry Rice isn't doing that stuff. The guy is an example to follow on and off the field. He worked harder than anyone and he's a total gentleman.

Al may have been upset over Gannon's statement but I'd wager that it was John Herrera's colossal incompetence that made it into an issue that spilled over into the media.

    John Herrera's colossal incompetence
When the man in charge keeps someone like that around, everything (including the big man's competence) comes into question.

Ok, first off if the rumors about Marcus being with the wives of other players are true, maybe Mr. Davis felt if he took a different approach and did air this info that other players and their families would be adversely affected. So, he did what was best for them despite the personal criticism he would end up getting.

In the documentary Ice Cube did about the Raiders, he asked Davis about the issue with Marcus and Davis said he and Marcus knew what happened. It seemed to me that this was all that was important to Davis and that he had no intention of ever providing more info about it.

On the other hand, I've never seen Marcus come out and give HIS side of what happened. And if he was so "innocent", why hasn't he spoken out about it???

Second point... I have NEVER heard or seen anything to indicate "Marcus tried to make things right." If you have proof of otherwise, please provide it or please note that your comment was your "opinion". On the contrary, Marcus even went into the HOF as a CHIEF just to spite Davis.

First time I ever heard this but it sounds way more
    plausible than a contract dispute.

    God bless both of them!

i've also heard another reason behind the Al Davis-Marcus Allen feud was that Marcus Allen was having a successful rushing season that year, and Al Davis's ego got in the way.

    That would be nice

As long as he doesn't do what rod Woodson did with the secondary last season. Most times hall of fame players are the worst coaches…

    As long as it works!!

That's one that I think is hog wash. I think that Al and Marcus had conflicting personalities and that was the biggest issue that led to everything else but Al never punished a player for playing well on the field. It was what Marcus did on the field that made Al keep him even after he was pissed at him. Al didn't want Marcus going somewhere else in his prime and killing us. As it is Marcus had some decent years with KC.

Gannon not welcome in Alameda - SFGate

Herrera quoted Gannon as saying in several interviews they should just "blow up the building and start over" in Oakland. Team officials took that as literally as they did figuratively, and told Gannon as much before last season's home game against the Chiefs.

"We think in a post 9/11 world, that's not a very proper thing to say," Herrera said. "It's uncalled for. He seems to be a guy who can't get over the fact that he played the worst Super Bowl game in the history of the game and he wants to blame everybody but himself.

"I guess it's our fault he threw five interceptions."
I am just happy Herrera didn't blame 911 on Pete Rozell.

Water under the bridge at this point in time... time to move forward folks...
"You can't Appoint, Hire, or Declare Leadership" ~ Sonny Barger

"Al Davis thought all owners were dilettantes with a new toy. He said to me many times through the years that owners are often the problem with their franchises, that too many of them think they can run things when they cannot, and the teams that succeed are the ones where the owner hires the best people he can and turns the game over to them."
