    Conversation: With John Madden
    Tom Tolbert
    Sunday, June 10, 2012

This week's KNBR Conversation is an edited excerpt from an interview of former Raiders coach John Madden by Tom Tolbert on Wednesday:

Tolbert: What do you think (Raiders quarterback) Carson Palmer has left in the tank?

Madden: I think they have to take a little pressure off him. If he has (running back Darren) McFadden for the whole year, obviously that's gonna help him. I just felt, Palmer came in late, didn't have a training camp - well, no one had a training camp, but he didn't even have preseason - and came in and had to do it. And then when McFadden got hurt, there was too much on his shoulders. I just felt that you have to back him off a little, and just let him have some running game, a better defense, better special teams, just improve all your other areas, and I think that will really help Carson Palmer.

Tolbert: McFadden's the key, isn't he?

Madden: Well, yeah he is. You hate to say it, but he has to stay healthy. You can say that about anyone, but if he doesn't stay healthy, they still have to have a good running game. You have to be able to do that. Then you can play-action pass, and then stay out of really long yardage, and stop the stupid penalties.

Tolbert: I think the 49ers are going to be better this year, but the schedule is gonna be tougher. How do they maneuver those obstacles?

Madden: Well I think (49ers head coach) Jim Harbaugh, last year, did one of the greatest coaching jobs not only of the year, but in the history of the NFL. To do that with a new coaching staff, no OTAs, no minicamps - just had to go into training camp and start doing that, and get all that stuff installed. I thought he did a great job. ... I think they're going to be a good team with Jim Harbaugh for a long time, but I think they'll have a tough time matching the record they had last year.

John Madden:They've got a ways to go. He was playing the game without a full deck. To be honest, they don’t have enough players. The cupboard was pretty bare. It would have been tough to do much more than what they did. If he’s going to do well, they gotta get a lot more … some teams need a quarterback or a running back, or a pass rusher … . The Raiders need a whole barrel of guys!

The man is absolutely correct, we have to have a balanced attack for the offense to chew up TOP and score touchdown. Which in turn keeps the defense well rested throughout the whole game. How many times have we seen the D sucking wind from too much time on the field.

Special teams needs to do their part too. Then throw the penalties in. We shoot ourselves in the foot before we even get started sometimes, it's so frustrating the lack of discipline and accountability but hopefully that has changed. Need to click on all cylinders.

Guy is a legend. Knows what he is talking about. As wished in a sense he could come back in coach.

I wish we had this guy on board in some capacity. Maybe he can't be the coach but he could help us in the front office and advise Mark Davis.

Madden is right....Everybody has to play better and you gotta be able to win with backup RBs
We have manned our backup QB position better this year, so if we lose Carson we should still have a chance.
