Some of you may of already new, but i just heard it for the first time, on NFL Sirius Radio yesterday.
June 8th 1966 the NFL and AFL agreement to merge.
"The NFL fired a shotgun into the air and Al Davis came back and fired a Machine gun"
it is in this video around 4:10 min mark it states the fact.

It didn't actually happen. Do you think there was a big meeting and the "NFL" fired a pistol into the air so Al pulled out a shotgun and fired that off? They are just talking about his tactics and reactions to the NFL's moves.
"the nfl fired a shot with a revolver and Davis responded with a machine gun."

That was in reference to Al convincing the AFL to sign NFL stars like John Brodie, Mike Ditka, Roman Gabriel and others to future AFL contracts

"...there was one constant, one center, one captain, one Original Raider...his name was Jim Otto, his number was 00...for more than a full decade, he was the standard of excellence by which centers were judged in professional football"...

Thanks for the link JIMI I enjoyed the video..
If I remember correctly, the metaphor describes Al's response to the NFL poaching an AFL player, which was in breach of an agreement (verbal or written) that had been worked out between the two leagues. Al responded by aggressively courting all the top players/draft selections who had been off limits. I don't remember the specifics.

I love how even still they downplay Al's role in this article. The NFL signed one AFL player, a kicker no less, so Al goes and signs 8 starting NFL QBs. That is in essence what caused the merger, and WHY the NFL hated Al so much and still do.
Here is a great article about all this stuff that was going on.
