Word, I remember the Snake showing up just before the game still drunk and throwing up in the huddle then throwing four TD passes. Freddie B and Sistrunk smoking on the bench during the game. The Stork showing up at practice riding a horse with a Nazi helmet on, man I miss those days.

Yep. First game I went to was in 1970 when I was a kid in Oakland. Oakland fans were blue collar drinking types. Lots of booster clubs were formed in local bars (like where my parents hung out sometimes). Good, clean fun. I moved to LA in 1980 and saw that whole deal where the numerous gang types, real and pretend, were flourishing and took to the Raiders, partly due to the uniform, logo and colors being gang neutral (not red or blue). Then, somewhere in there, the costumed freak show happened with the "dark side" stuff. I think Al Davis was wondering to himself what the hell happened, but it was all good I suppose.

The 1967 game was one of the most vicious in Jet history. Namath was slugged to the turf; he was hit late, punched in the groin. They aimed for his knees, tried to step on his hands ... And Davidson got Namath. He got him on a rollout, with a right that started somewhere between [California cities] Hayward and Alameda. It knocked Namath's helmet flying, and broke his jaw, but Namath didn't miss a play, and he threw for 370 yards and three TD's in that 38–27 loss. (Raiders Victory)
Glad to see this story in print. I've told it a couple of times and each time I tell it it seems a little less believable.
In order to be a bad ass you need to compete and prove yourself against other bad ass teams and players. Namath was bad ass.
Another bad ass, Hewritt Dixon used to club tacklers with his free arm. once delivered a vicious uppercut and was called for a personal foul. I've heard Shula tell the same story about Csonka, and claim that he's the first and only....not true.
Oakland has a bit of a reputation itself.

Simple: Al Davis.
No argument. Move on.
Go Raiders.
They got it from Oakland
