Every signing MAY be the worst ever. Aso could tear his ACL this year and never be the same. Smiley could win the starting job and make his first pro bowl.

My point: We won't know until after the season

I believe the writer of the article may have changed his tune after you posted. In parentheses at the top it now says that the point of the article is moot due to the CBA being different now than what it was before.

Could we have gotten 2 3rds for both Aso and Miller? Both were top tier FA's...

    ^^this^^

just because we went out and signed Wand, Heyer and Smiley doesn't mean that these guys will actually make it onto the roster.

i think the person who wrote the article on the Raiders blog is prematurely jumping the gun. the Raiders will be compensated for the loss of 3 starters, two of which were Pro Bowlers last year.

I don't think Gallery will yield a third...Aso is a 3rd for sure. Miller a 3rd/4th, Gallery more a 4th/5th maybe even 6th because he only started 8 games last season.

Gallery for sure will not yield a 3rd. last draft the Panthers were the only team to get a 3rd round compensatory pick and that's because they lost Julius Peppers. they were given a 7th for losing AJ Feeley.

two teams got a 4th, both Tennessee and Green Bay for the loss of Kyle Vanden Bosch and Aaron Kampman respectively. i think this is where Gallery would probably be slated.

i mean c'mon....the Raiders were given a 7th round comp pick for losing Cornell Green.

I could be wrong about this, but if memory serves me doesn't the whole compensatory pick thing also consider the specific positions you lost out on and if you got a FA to replace them slated at that particular position?

i.e. in principle, why would picking up Trent Edwards negate losing freaking Nnamdi in terms of compensation?

    no.

they take into consideration starters, production, etc. when handing out compensatory picks.

comp picks are handed out for two things...losing more free agents than it signs and/or losing free agents that were better than those signed. so for example's sake, if the Eagles lose Vick next season and sign Jake Delhomme, they'd probably still end up with a 3rd round comp pick. just signing fill-ins doesn't negate compensatory picks.

the only things i'd see being a wash would be the signings of the three OL with the loses of Mario Henderson and Langston Walker.
