Latest from Pro Football Weekly
"The long-term contract negotiations between the Raiders and exclusive franchise free-agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha continue to drag on, but we hear they have not turned contentious. Sources fully expect the two sides to reach an agreement, and Asomugha has made it clear that he has no intention of extending his holdout into the season" |

I think they are working hard on Aso's contract but realize they may have let things get out of control. Those Yahoo Sports rumors of Al in regret IMO are directly coorilated w Aso. Al wanted to put together a winning team now. Kelly needed to be kept with Sapp retiring and Burgess's contract quickly expiring and all the questions on DL. Seeing the opportity of having two of the leagues best corners was too tempting to pass up for a 2nd round draft pick.
Now Al has to long term fit in the contracts of Russell, McFadden, Fargas, Huff, Gallery, Kelly, Hall, Javon Walker, Sands ect. They don't just have to fit in Aso for one year, but mulit years. Al has always been a cap master and probably overpaid as he felt fit to get players on a team with winning and coaching concerns. Oakland was one of the least desirable places for free agents going into the year. I think Al may have had a long term deal for Aso in mind all along, however started biting off more than he can chew. I think that is why it looks like we may be getting help in the scouting/cap department from the guy from Green Bay (sorry can't remember his name). I think they will get Aso signed but need to look carefully at the roster's salaries in the long run and also keep in mind they want to resighn Burgess. |

Nope. July 15th is the deadline to sign a franchise player to a contract extension. That wouldn't make sense. If that was the case then players could just refrain from signing until after July 15th and they would never have to be franchised by that franchise again.
