Offense VS Defense
I'm not here to pimp my idea of draft picks or player aquistions. EVERYONE. talks about our need to improve defense and rightfully so. But we've invested a TON via draft picks and free agents and I hope that Ryan can do something with it. I look at the other side and so what Kiffin did with nothing as far as talent and am very excited and anxious to see what he and Russell can do with an influx on that side of the ball both on the line and skill possitions.
DEFENSE
Passing- Scoring 4th (17 td) Yds 8th (3022 total 195.8 ypg)
Rushing- Scoring 32nd (24 td) Yds 31st (2334 total 145.9 ypg)
Overall- Scoring 26th (24.9 ppg) Yds 22nd (5466 total 341.6 ypg)
OFFENSE
Passing- Scoring 24th (17 td) Yds 31st (2631 total 164.4 ypg)
Rushing- Scoring 18th (11 td) Yds 6th (2086 total 130.4 ypg)
Overall- Scoring 23rd (17.7 ppg) Yds 25th (4717 total 294.8 ypg)
2006
Offense 32nd in yds 32nd in pts
Defense 3rd in yds 18th in pts
Kiffin went up 9 places in scoring and 7 places in yds even with using 3 different QBs and RBs behind a suspect line. We've been giving Ryan players and the only good year he had 2006 and that is because teams got to early leads and played conservative. We've made some key additions and could stand to use a couple more on D. But I think that this should be Ryan's test with the new players. Kiffin sees the talent on that side and like me he thinks the problem lies in the schemes and coaching.

With all the cheese Al has dumped on Def, not just this year alone, I see him start adding to the Off side...MO

And at this point I think Davis needs to recoup some money back for his investors...

If we win a championship we will make a hell of a lot more money and sell more tickets then if we have a flashy offence.

True, but you don't build championship caliber defenses with cornerbacks as your top priority... you need a killer D-line and LB corps...

What I'm saying is we've given Ryan some good draft picks and many aren't even playing with us (Bing, Moses).
2007 3rd-Quenton Moses
4th-John Bowie
5th- Jay Richardson and Eric Frampton
2006 1st Michael Huff
2nd Thomas Howard
4th Darnell Bing
2005 1st Fabian Washington
2nd Stanford Routt
3rd Kirk Morrison
6th Anttaj Hawthorne
6th Ryan Riddle
2004 3rd Stuart Schweigert
6th Cody Spencer
We made several more FA moves this year. Do we keep investing draft picks and free agency moves, or do we give Kiffin who performed well as a yr 1 coach and re-evaluate if we need to go in a different direction defensively. To me it seems useless to keep sinking FA and draft picks into a system and coach that are not going to use them effectively. And yes we do need to invest more on the D-Line but Ryan needs to make it a priority and improve with the players he has.

DMAC upgrades our defense right our the gate. If he performs as expected he adds that extra "Grind it out" element that we need to keep our opponents offense off the field AND keeping ours fresh. It also gives the franchise a new face to hang our hat on and a reliable weapon for Russell to evolve with.
DMAC is the pick in April.

DMC does not give the "Grind out element" He provides the big play early lead element. He wouldn't be a 30 carry back. He would be a 15-20 carry back with 6 or 7 pass attempts. Also he would be a gameplan changer as coaches would have to account for him. He would however improve the defense because with quick scores opposition would be forced to make plays against our new secondary instead of marching down the field on our run d. So he would be the "Anti ground out element"

the pick will be DMAC simply because that kind of player does not come around often. The draft will always have the VGs and Longs (both of them). We probably would be better off addressing the needs on Defence but we can always do that next year. There wont be a DMAC next year and im sure Kiffin wants to use him like Reggie bush. The future will be the combo of DMAC and M Bush much like USC used Lendale White and Reggie Bush.
