Jeff Otis and Erik Meyer are capable juniors who can develop into back-ups or 3rd stringers this year.
I don't think Walter is under the gun at all, but he should lift his game. I could see someone like Otis or Meyer holding down a 3rd string role. |

Sorry I am not comfortable with either of the 3 at 2 or 3. Walter might be a #3.

But that's fair enough to not feel comfortable. My pov is that Walter has to step up this year. No more goofing around. No McCown/Culpepper/Russell pouting or excuses. He's got to try to out perform Russell at camp just to make some noise, give the coaches something to think about, just to retain the #2 spot. I think Otis and Meyer are good development prospects. They're both young and are capable. Unlike the Josh Booty signing which was pure camp fodder. These two, have a chance to claim a roster spot, maybe the other one goes to practice squad. But you need to develop young talent deep in the depth chart. That's why teams have undrafted guys like Berlin, Moore, Zabranski (sp?) etc. And, it also 'proves' that Kiffin is here for the long haul, because he's set his mind on developing young QBs here. Normally the Raiders have like seasoned vets at starter-back-up and don't develop anyone. But Otis AND Meyer shows Kiffin's here, and dedicated to developing QB talent. Eg, Otis, his 2nd camp/pre-season with Kiffin. Why is Walter not mentioned here? Because he was a late first round prospect and ultimately 3rd round draft pick, so he has higher expectation on him. So he has to prove he's starter/back-up material RIGHT NOW. |
