Don't know the the overall cap situation for next year or even this year, but I know that Jordan's base for 2007 is $1M, with a $3M roster bonus, so his total cap value for this
year is right around $4M. His 2008 and 2009 base salaries are respectively $4.7M and $5M. So if he were cut from here on out, there would be no dead money in future years. Rhodes received a two year contract and a $1M SB. 2007 base is $1.5M (- $352,941 due to four-game suspension), and 2008 base is $5M. If Rhodes were cut from here on out, the only dead money that would be on the books in 2008 is $500,000 (half of the signing Bonus). |

And every team has overpaid players they can cut to lower their cap commitment. |

If those numbers are correct then that is another sign that we have improved! Every year going into March we are some $30 mil over the cap and have to redo a bunch of contracts to get under. Keep in mind that the salaries for Sapp, Jordan, Warren, Rhodes, Gallery, Sims, Thomas all count for $22,962,500 not including bonuses.
Most if not all of that can come off the books with a little work and getting rid of some of those players. That means we will be nearly $40 million under the projected cap of $116 Million. So we can resign Aso, Morrison & maybe Burgess to longer deals, pay for our 1st Rd pick and sign a couple free agents.

There wasn't going to be a lot of personnel changes coming in. The first year a new coach will evaluate who is a fit and who isn't. This off season there will be as many as 12 starters cut on both sides of the line.
It looks like for once we are back in good position to get players in FA. 40 Mil is a nice number to work with to get some quality talent. This wont be the same team next year. It will be interesting if any current starting O line players survives the blood letting thats coming.

Do we have a lot of cap space comeing up? yep, and the players will go where the money is.
That also is part of the problem, because we are soooo bad we will have to severly overpay any player to get them to come here. Therefore, we really don't have that much cap space. Make sense? |
