On the day the Oakland Raiders reduced their roster by 11 players, they were trying to replace a member of the coaching staff.

John Fox resigned as defensive coordinator Saturday, with only Friday's game against the Jets left before the regular season opens. Coach Mike White named Fred Whittingham, the linebackers coach, to take Fox's duties.

Fox submitted his resignation to Bruce Allen, the Raiders' senior assistant, and in a brief statement said he did not want to elaborate on his reasons for leaving.
''I was taken totally by surprise,'' White said.
Fox was in his third season as defensive coordinator and had recently bought a home in the San Francisco area.

By way of contrast, three other defensive backs who are also long in the tooth said this week that they'd like to continue playing but preferably not for the Raiders. CB Lionel Washington and safeties Eddie Anderson and Lorenzo Lynch all indicated a desire to play for some other team.

Think before you knock them for saying that. Lynch lives in Oakland and sold peanuts at the Coliseum as a kid; playing for the Raiders was a lifelong dream for him. Anderson signed with the team as a scab during the 1987 players strike and was a personal favorite of Al Davis. Although his talent has deteriorated as he's grown older, he's always played hard and been willing to sacrifice himself trying to make a tackle. Lionel Washington is a classy guy, too. Last year, when Kansas City cornerback Dale Carter threw a cheap shot cut-block at the back of Washington's knees—something which could have ended Washington's career—he went out of his way to avoid saying anything inflammatory.

The fact that these three want out is a sad reflection of just how bad the disarray is within the Raiders organization.

Not only did the Giants go undefeated in the NFC East—something no team had ever done before—they did it without a decent quarterback, relying on a great defense. Fassel's defensive coordinator? None other than John Fox, much maligned by the Raiders when he was squeezed out at the beginning of the 1996 season.

Funny how some coaches seem to bloom as soon as they depart the Raiders organization. Denver's Mike Shanahan also comes to mind . . .

Think about the blame dumped on Raiders offensive coordinator Ray Perkins this year for the unimaginative and conservative play-calling. Perkins ran New England's offense last year, and the Pats played in the Super Bowl. Their offensive scheme was productive and anything but conservative, mixing Curtis Martin's running with the long ball to Terry Glenn. Then remember how conservative Fassel's play-calling seemed to be when he was with the Raiders. Hmmm . . . Next, consider the anonymous comments of several players last week, suggesting not only that Perkins isn't free to call the plays as he'd like, but that he's actually given a list of plays he can call by Al Davis.

To this observer the conclusion is obvious and inescapable. The one common denominator year after year is Al Davis. The media's been right—Davis does meddle in the play-calling, to the detriment of the team.

Fox's ascent up the coaching ladder followed a conventional pattern until 1996, when he was beginning his third season as the defensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders' defenses under Fox had been among the league's best for two seasons but the 1996 preseason had gotten off to a rocky start and in an organizational meeting one day at training camp, the Oakland owner, Al Davis, started riding Fox hard.

Fox never discusses the day, but others present at the meeting have told the story. Davis keeps up his salty, caustic criticism and Fox finally stands and answers back. Just as forcefully. And as salty.

The Foxes had just moved into a new home, and Fox's wife, Robin, was unpacking boxes when the telephone rang.

''It was John and he said to me: 'Robin, don't freak out. I just quit my job. I'll be home in an hour,' '' Robin said, describing the day in a 1997 interview. ''Of course, I totally freaked out.''

The Foxes moved back to St. Louis, where Robin's parents lived, and John took a scouting job with the Rams. When the Giants hired Fassel, who coached with Fox in Oakland and knew the lay of the land there, it took Fassel less than a week to name Fox his defensive coordinator.

You'd be shooting yourself in the foot as far as your potential career goes, if you say you had a problem with the guy who runs things, good luck getting a better job. IMO he probably left because he wasn't willing to sell himself out to make Al happy.

I guess that means Ryan who had a similar blitzing style to Fox, sold his a$$ to the devil. He, he!

Had this discussion with my friend the other night. People ripped Moss for going on the air with that comment and look at the Raiders a year later. Randy Moss must be the happiest man on earth to get outta Oakland. Its sad what the hell is going on with the Raiders Organization. And people still don't wanna believe its Al Davis. Comfirmed all you Al Davis lovers read all this **** about ya hero. No wonder why nobody wants to coach here. Who the hell in they right mind would continue to put up with this stupid ****? I wouldn't be surprised at all if Lane Kiffin doesn't walk away before his contract is up. Then what? Where are we gonna get a coach from? Probaly the same flea market we got bums like Cornell Green from.
