Newbie Question...

Hey guys, I have a silly, and probably VERY common newb question. What are reputation points for? I tried doing a search, and found a thread about how ppl were whoring them back and forth, but I didn't see what they were for? I also found another thread that stated that you can 'view' who leaves you rep points, but again, not explaining what they actually are.

Can someone drop me a few details?

Rep point have two categories Positive and Negative rep. Rep points are given by members to other members for accomplishments such as every 1000 posts, insightful posts or on the negative side offensive posts. People get bored on the offseason and play around with rep points for answering trivia questions etc then there is the flat out whoring for rep.

Here's some rep for asking a good question. Some of our new members don't know what rep is and how to spread it around!

Do you get to give a certain 'amount' of points when you feel like someone has accomplished somthing benificial? Is there a standard amount given when adding points by using the 'reputation' feature? Do you ever get to do anything with the 'points' or are they just a potential token for internet integrity?

This seems to be a feature I am not so familiar with in my forum expierances. Thank you for all of your responses so far, and thank you Farmgirl for the rep points (even though I dunno what to do with them :p).
