What is the difference between enchroachment and offsides?
I know that enchroachment is a five yard penalty on the defense and so is offsides, but offsides the defense is allowed a free play. Why is it that the play is dead when it is an enchroachment penalty? It seems like in both cases the defesne jumps so what is the difference? How can you tell if it si enchroachment versus offsides?

Encroachment
When a player goes past the line of scrimmage and hits someone before the ball is snapped
Off Sides
When a player goes past the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped

AND - because a player who jumps "offsides" and gets back before the ball is snapped, he's still all good. And, if he doesn't get back in time essentially, it's a free play for the Offense because, the D's offsides. Once the contact is made - "encroachment" - then the play's over - there's no getting back.

Why is it that the play is dead when it is an enchroachment penalty?
acctually it can be whistled dead on offsides if the person is to close to the QB
